Did your DCs have BCG? If so what age?

That really. If you DCs had the BCG what age were they? My newborn DS has been invited to have it soon after birth.

I think it depends on where you live and how high the risk is of getting TB. It isn't offered round here at all. When I was at school we all had the jab at 15, but that was a long time ago.

Here kids get it either at the hospital or within the first month.

Seminyak · 13/02/2013 08:40

Don't have kids but I had it around year 10 I think, so age 15ish. That was 8 years ago, pretty sure it probably hasn't changed since.

My dd was 18 months, my ds was done almost immediately after birth. Neither had problems with the blister but I hear it can be problematic for some.

My 7 week old DD had her BCG last week as paternal grandad had TB as a child. They dont offer it in every area just where the risks are high.

Doctor was telling us that they stopped the vaccination program in schools about 4 years ago. It was protested against by the medical profession, but the government stopped it ( trying to save money as always). So now you only get offered it if you're high risk.

My dc have both had their bcg vaccination because dp was working in a high risk area. Ds1 was 5, ds2 was 8 weeks

weegiemum · 14/02/2013 16:12

Dh and I both had it at age 13

Our dc had it early as we were travelling to central America. Dd1 was 5.0, ds was 4.0, dd1 was 16 months. They also had typhoid/hepA, hepB and rabies.

Dd1 was delighted this week as the forms for bcg came home from school and she doesn't need it!

I have a dd in year 8. We live in London, so quite a high risk area. However, dd will not be given the BCG. We were sent a letter only offering BCG to high risk children. These are children who were born in a high risk area (approx. outside developed areas such as the EU, USA, Canada, Australia or New Z) or have at least one parent or grandparent born in a high risk area. Quite often if your child is in this category, they will have been immunised as a baby.

Dd is quite happy about. I'm less so because AFAIK the incidence of TB is rising in urban areas. I know people who have caught TB who were British born and who have not travelled overseas. Seems short sighted policy, but one that has been in place for quite a few years (ie. not coalition policy).

DS was offered it in hospital, as we apparently live in a high risk post code. I suffered a reaction to the jab as a teenager and felt really uncomfortable subjecting my teeny tiny newborn to something that could make him feel poorly. I asked to delay, but was told that I'd have to pay to have it done privately if it wasn't done on the postnatal ward. I've never got round to doing itBlush

Bizarrely, friends who had home births who live on the same street as me were never offered and had no idea we live in a 'high risk' postcode. It all seems rather odd.

CrazyOldCatLady · 14/02/2013 16:31

Mine have both had it; we're in Ireland and all babies get it as soon after birth as possible (though mine were 6 weeks and 6 months by the time we managed to get them done )

BlingBubbles · 14/02/2013 16:35

My dd had it when she was 6months and it was fine, the mark on her arm stayed there for ages but I think it's gone now, she is 19months.

Supersesame · 14/02/2013 16:38

We're in Ireland too. DC had it age 1 day in hospital.
Its quite funny that they always ask the dad would they like to take the baby to the bcg room. I think they probably think it upsets the mums too much watching their newborn baby be branded.

RubyrooUK · 14/02/2013 16:49

Mine was 5 weeks old and had it at our GP as all infants in our borough are offered it as there is a high movement of population to and from countries where TB is still very common.
