DS had vision test at school (age 5). He came home with a letter saying he had some difficulty with smallest letters?? It didn't say if close up or far away?

The trouble is he already has hearing aids and isnt confident about those......he will be so upset with glasses as well!

How good is the school test? Is there a chance it may be wrong?

:(

I am tempted not to wait for the hospital appointment and take him out of school tomorrow and go to an optition....is this mad? Only I don't want weeks of worrying about it :(

If you are going to feel more at ease by taking him out of school then do it

Take him to an optician while you wait for the appointment, there is no reason to worry when you can sort it so easily Smile

I wouldn't rely on the school vision test. As I recall, it's more of a general screening thing rather than a full eye test. We get our children's vision tested once a year.

Do you think they tested near or far sight?
I took him to speaksavers last year and he was fine :( he really won't like hearing aids and glasses, self esteem is all ready shocking :(

It is a screening test, not a definitive one. It could be that there is an issue or it could be that he was tired that day.

Either way, even if he ends up with glasses I wouldn't worry, there are loads of decent nice and trendy glasses around for kids now.

DS1 is now 12 and has worn glasses since a baby and we've never had a problem. (Interestingly, it's only now he's at secondary school that he is getting the 4 eyes comments etc).

Many opticians will only see kids at certain times as they may only have one optician who does kids eye tests (I know out local Specsavers will only see kids on Sundays). Also, they rely on them having a good grasp of letters and being able to say them clearly with letter names rather than sounds, I don't know how your 5 year old is with that?

I really wouldn't worry at this stage, easier said than done I know.

I don't rate school eye tests, failed to pick up issue with ds's eyes, I'd take him to optician to put you more at ease and find out if its neat or far sighted, try not to stress if it means glasses, your ds will pick up on ur anxiety about it x
