The doctor says lots of people are getting/being 'Post viral' this winter; are they?

DD hasn't 'picked up' after sinusitis & the dr said lots of people were struggling this way this winter

Are other people finding the same?

How's she doing today Katy? Has she had blood tests etc now?

I am down with yet another chest infection, I know it's going to take its toll for a good few weeks even after the infection is cleared. Stupid sodding CFS. Grrr.

Totally understand your worry - I too know people with family connections to CFS so it does seem likely there is a genetic element to it, at least in terms of vulnerability.

My ds (7) had the same after having a flu type illness that swept throughthe school in December, followed by a chest infection, early Jan I noticed a large lump oin the side of his neck which he said wasn't painful. After all the symptoms were described to the Dr, muscle pain, severe fatigue in a football mad boy, joint pain especially his hips and frequent headaches, she ordered a blood test to eliminate anything cancer like. Did a follow up test last week and it came back positive for Glandular Fever.

He can have a good few hours and goes to school but it just wipes him out. He was allowed to do PE last Friday (even though the teaching staff were told to please keep an eye on him and discourage any football or running around) it floored him for 4 days.

I feel for anyone who has a child with this, feel nothing but anxiety for me as I am a single mum working full time. My employer loves me right now, not.

It's awful; she is so tired

She went in for 2 hours again today after her blood test and a nap

She has a big course coming up....I am quite concerned I'll have to cancel it

Of course she could just be a bit post viral & fine by the weekend I hope

:( she will be gutted about the course but if she pushes herself she could get more ill, and for longer.

How much longer can you leave it before you decide?

Well I think we lose the money whatever - it's in London, she was spending a week with her Great Uncle & going to see 'A Chorus Line'

It's a pre-vocational course

Hey. Thats good news. When do you get test results?

Report
KatyMac · 25/01/2013 19:22

5 days from yesterday; but someone said on another thread that the test isn't always conclusive

The blood tests are in & she is all clear - so I guess it's post viral (or it could still be glandular fever apparently)

Well it is good that she is all clear. Why didnt they test for glandular fever?

Report
BeaWheesht · 31/01/2013 08:27

I think they did test for it january it's just that sometimes you get a negative result even when it was post viral.

Fwiw I think there are a lot of bugs hanging around recently - my ds has been off almost a fortnight Hmm

It's important that kids try to make it into school little and often, otherwise they lose touch with their friends really fast.

Just in the playground there seems to be more people with post viral fatigue - usual colds do seem to have been accompanied with jelly-like legs & lightheadedness. It may be a more virulent strain of virus BUT I'm inclined to think that the lack of sun last year(practically constant rain & grey skies here for months)has meant that our bodies are at a low ebb.

Am aware that sounds old-wife-taleish with no hard evidence Blush

Katy - a few hours every day is good, at least that way she's keeping in touch with friends wtc & has the routine of going to school. Is she aware of when she needs to stop & take it easy? I think that is one of the hardest things.

I know the idiot child did the whole day today & then had a singing lesson & then options evening

I have had a massive strop and really shouted Sad

It is hard isn't it. My dd always wants to miss school but then overdoes it at home on really silly things like jumping round the house, yesterday was pretending to be a pony galloping round. Its normal child behaviour but so frustrating when she then feels really poorly after. If it makes you feel better I shouted at dd too just out of sheer frustration of trying to manage the situation. She is only 7 after all, so I felt very bad after Blush
I hope your dd isn't suffering the after effects today

Oh I'm sorry she suffered the after effects yesterday but not surprising. I hope you manage to have a good weekend. My daughter has no hormones involved yet has huge mood swings, goes from being very low & withdrawn to hyper & talking non stop for hours barely pausing for breath, talking utter rubbish, I really think she's unable to stop herself. She is also angry, stroppy, tearful & at times I struggle to recognise my dd Sad

Well dd has had a friend round today shes not seen for ages. To begin with I said it would be 3 hours max but they were playing so nice & it was lovely to see the old dd back I let them be. Stayed for about 6 hours, dd fine all the time, I did make sure they watched a dvd so she had some quiet time too. Half an hour after friend went dd crashed & is feeling rotten. I am annoyed at myself really for not being stricter but it was great to see her being happy and also great not to have her moaning about being bored every two minutes!

I was like this after glandular fever. It was horrible, I didn't feel ill and wanted to be out and doing everything, but just didn't have the energy and would inevitably crash and burn. Didn't help that friends thought I was just being a lazy wimp and my housemate at the time decided to take me in hand and gave me a big lecture about not putting in enough effort with going to lectures Angry
