Dd eczema steroid and moisturiser question

SalagadooLamagicaboo · 17/01/2013 19:49

Dd 15mths has been prescribed steroid cream for her eczema today.

The doctor said to apply the cream twice a day and her moisturiser (double base) 3-4 times a day.

My question is can I apply the steroid cream and double base the one after the other or does it needs to be done in 2 separate instance?

The eczema is located on her back.

Any advice please? Thank you

Hi. I always apply the steroid cream first, leave it 10 mins or so to sink in, then you are safe to put the moisturiser on. This is on ad ice from our dermatologist.

Hope it clears it up for your poor DD.

Double base first then steroid. Steroid will soak through the doublebase. Thin layer steroid only. Also put double base on before a bath /swimming and don't use soap/bubbles etc in bath. Hope that helps.

Hi, when my ds had the steroid cream the doctor told me to put on the steroid and then wait about 30mins before putting on the moisturiser.

Hope that helps

When needing to use both you should put the steroid cream first, wait 30mins for it to sink in then can cover with moisturiser. If you put both on at the same time the steroid cream will not get absorbed as the moisturiser forms a barrier.

Steroid is lipophilic so goes through the doublebase

SalagadooLamagicaboo · 17/01/2013 19:58

Thank you so much!

Poor dd not the best time for her to get it, it is located on her back, I guess she is going to spend lots of time in nappy only and we will have to put the heating up for her.

Hi you've had conflicting advice on this thread and all well meaning from lovely mnetters wanting to help. I'm a gp but you shouldn't take that at face value as i guess i could be anyone!

I suggest you go to www.patient.co.uk and search for eczema. Has a good patient info leaflet that answers your question called eczema and steroid creams. The leaflet also covers finger tip units which explains how much to put on.this website is a reliable source of information if you need answers in the future.

The cream will dry quick enough no need to leave clothes off..you can't overdose on doublebase so can always keep with nappies and reapply at every change.

Right i'm way too sad aren't i...time to stop working. Hope your dd clears up soon!

Thanks sleep,

I went to the pharmacy today to pick up my prescription and asked them for advice.

First steroid cream, wait 20mins and then apply double base.

I have bookmarked the website you gave me and I will use it in the future

Thanks again

My GP told me the opposite - diprobase and then the hydrocortisone Confused

OrchidFlakes · 18/01/2013 19:55

I was told dermol then hydrocortisone too.. Confused

mmmmsleep · 18/01/2013 21:18

The leaflet on pt.co.uk says first emoillient then steroid. This is what evidence says, what cons dermatologists taught me and what i tell my patients to do.

In reality it probably doesn't matter loads as shown by all the conflicting advice you've had and the fact no one's skin dropped off as a result of doing it differently.

Hope dd's skin better soon and sorry to have added to your confusion by conflicting with the pharmacist's advice. As i said it'll be fine either way i expect. Many ways to boil an egg.

AmandinePoulain · 18/01/2013 21:41

Thanks mmm, I was told that that's what the current research says to do Smile
