Recurring ear infections

DD is on her 3rd one now in 2 months, antibiotics each time. Absolutely fine last night going to bed and then woke up at 10.30 screaming and clutching her ear... Then was awake all night yawns

Doctor doesn't seem phased at all with the frequency. I was plagued with them as a child, hope she isn't the same Sad

3 infections in 2 months is pretty rough going isn't it? I seem to be then only one concerned!

Dd (2) had 2 in 6 weeks in oct/ nov last year. It's pretty normal I think but if she gets another it might be worth asking for a referral to ENT. Is her hearing ok?

You could make an appointment for the end of the antibiotic course so they can check its worked? Ds once needed 2 courses in a row.

Ds is 6 now and touch wood lat year only had one or maybe 2. In previous years it was every couple of months with very high temperature and being very unwell.

My DS had something like 15 prescription for antibiotics in one year - in the end we were on a rolling prescriptions. Even then I had to absolutely shout and scream to be taken seriously by the hospital and finally got grommets for my son at age 2. I'm not surprised they are taking a watch and wait approach at this point but you should keep an eye on it and start demanding a referral if it continues.

The problem I had was that NICE apparently aren't bothered about frequency of infection (or overuse of antibiotics) but on severity of hearing loss from ear infections. "Fortunately" my DS had some hearing loss or he wouldn't have had any treatment - recurrent ear infections and the associated pain in themselves didn't appear to be of any interest to anyone Sad

The good news is he hasn't had a single infection in 18 months so there is an effective treatment out there but you might have to fight for it.

3 in 2 months, if that is all it is, isn't that bad. If it continues then you can ask, but it really isn't that much.

Ds had infections about every 10 days from 3 months until 20 months when he had the first set of grommets. The grommets came out at 3.3yo and he had 8 perforated ear drums in the next 3 months before the next set of grommets.

I think they're looking for about 8+ infections in a year or signs of hearing loss before they refer, so someone told me. Sometimes 3 in 2 months just means that it hasn't properly cleared the first time.
