Fever and shivering?

DS is 4 and running a temp of 39C. He feels v hot to me, but complaining he's cold and wants blankets on. I know when I have temp I alternate too hot and then shivering cold.

So do I let him have blankets or not? Seems cruel to leave him shivering without anything on, but I realise he needs temp to come down. Have also given paracetamol.

If he is physically shivering, pop a sheet over him, as shivering can increase his temp apparently.

If his temp doesn't drop an hour after you've given paracetamol, and he's got pain anywhere I would give ooh a call.

Thanks for replies. He's not specified any pain. Only other symptom is a runny nose. I think it is probably viral as others in his nursery with same temp.

Temp been there all day but higher now. I woke him just 10 mins ago to give Calpol as he felt so hot when I checked him as i was heading to bed. He just said "can I go back to bed please Mummy with my blankets?" Bless! He isn't actually shivering so now he's asleep I've pulled his blankets off.

Why will he start to feel hot once Calpol kicks in? I don't get the mechanics of a fever and why you actually feel cold when burning up!

AFAIK

It's because when they're ill the body increases the 'normal correct' body temp so that say, 37, is 'too cold' and it makes you shiver until you reach the higher temp. This is because its trying to kill the bacteria with temperature but it makes you feel pretty bad. Calpol should help reset the normal correct temperature and therefore the body isn't trying to shiver to reach an inflated temp.

Ah that makes sense thank you!
