DS appears to be getting migraines. Should I get him checked by GP to confirm?

DS is 11 and over last two weeks has had 3 episodes of visual disturbance, headache and feeling very hot. He sleeps for a bit and wakes up fine.

The visual disturbance is a gap in his vision. I get migraines too and this is what happens to me.

All three of my sisters get migraine. My mum did as did her parents. Was hoping DS would escape but seemingly not.

I kind of think I should take him to GP to make sure that is what it is. DH not overly helpful as doesn't seem to want DS to have migraine! Reckons it's very rare in boys.

I started getting them at 11 too and just had to get on with it. Do they prescribe anything for children these days?

My son has had migraines since the age of 3, so boys do get them!

You really should take him to your GP to confirm it.

He can take Migraleve as he is over 10. My ds has also been prescribed Imigran by the paediatrician he sees.

defintly take him to the gP, guessing they will have a look in his eyes and maybe suggest an eye test! but having a look in eyes is a good plan, rules out some nasties, not that I think for a second its anything nasty.

Yes definitely - boys get them too. Your poor DS.

You might want to try the eye test, I got terrible headaches as a kids, I needed glasses.

I took him yesterday. Ruled out anything sinister. I knew it was migraines but when you wake at 4am you assume it's something horrible!

I have emailed school to let them know and will send a bottle if Nurofen in on Monday so if he feels one starting at school he can go to the medical centre and they can give him some Nurofen. He claimed to have one this morning but he has swimming with a teacher he doesn't like and has a habit of trying it on which is DH's main worry. I.e. He can now add migraine to his previous vague tummy aches or headaches when there is something he doesn't want to do! So he has been dosed up with Nurofen and sent to school with instructions to go to Matron if headache doesn't go.

My ds (almost 11) has had migraine for 2 years.

I can tell looking at him - there's something about his eyes! I get them, as does my dad. And his paternal uncle. Poor kid.

He tends to wake up sore and photophobic with aura. Ibuprofen plus calpol if needed. 4-6 hours later he vomits then all well.

We went to GP, got neurology referral we're still waiting. Our school won't give meds without prescription but as it's a morning thing it's ok for us.

Poor kids though, migraines suck!

mollymole · 19/01/2013 10:10

OK - you have been to the GP but please now take him to have his eyes tested - he may need glasses as well.

homebythesea · 19/01/2013 10:12

Another one with migrainy DS (since a baby- now a teen!). If they get frequent / disruptive to school GP may prescribe a profilactic to prevent / reduce the ferocity of future attacks. This is what we have done and it seems to be working. They can grow put of it- we shall see but with GCSE's looming we felt it best not to take any chances of missing school! It's horrible but manageable. We also did a brain scan to be on tbd safe side but only because it had been going on for so many years.

CiderwithBuda · 19/01/2013 11:42

So many DCs with migraines. They suck.

Mollymole - he had his eyes tested in August and vision was perfect. These are def classic migraines with aura so I don't think glasses would help.

Homebythesea - I'll bear that in mind.
