remember DDs heart thing a few weeks back?

well im taking her to GP tomorrow. She is 15. never had problems before but a few weeks ago she complained of a racing heart....

she says its happening daily - can be anytime - at rest or not. She says she feels a huge heart beat, she says she hears it, and then has pain in the chest followed by a racing heart. She says she cannot lay on her side due to the pain.

I took her to A&E last time it happened and the doc there said it was just hyperventilation.
but she doesnt hyperventilate with this.

he had her running up and down a corridor but of course it didnt happen to order.

she says it happens most days now though.

im not dismissing stress - she is doing GCSEs so it could be- but she maintains she is not feeling stressed and says she has been stressed before with exams etc and it never happened then...(which is true)

im hoping they will give her a 24 hour ECG which should catch it. Will she need referral for that or can a gp do it?

cheers.

I had similar when I was 19 and at uni. I was given a 24 hour ECG monitor and it picked up arrhythmia. The cardiologist said it was harmless though and wasn't concerned. It went by itself after 6 months or so. I didn't have any pain with it though. I hope she's ok, Vicar.

My ds recently had an ECG, stress test and an event monitor for two weeks to see what was causing his palpitations, your dd's symptoms sound very similar to his.
All his appointments were at a hospital that had a paediatric cardiology dept.

I developed superventricular tachaecardia at about 15. Google it and see if it sounds similar. I was told that it was panic attacks. I finally got a diagnosis when I was 28 and luckily managed to have an episode while I was in the consultant's office!

well we saw gp tonight who reckons its just ectopic heart beat and has booked DD in for an ECG which i am Hmm about - what are the chances of catching it happening in a 10 min ecg?

i was hoping they would do a 24 hour ecg which would catch it - she says it happens most days now.

im going to be a bit firmer at the review.

I've had a 3 day ECG and the same result was picked up on a 5 minute one.

Push for a longer ECG if you don't get any answers from this one. I'm sure doc will insist on referring anyway if he has no answers.

Good luck, I get regular palpitations and other heart symptoms but my latest ECG and specialist appt said all clear.

just read up on SVT - also googled ectopic heart beat earlier and that is a symptom of SVT.

i cant really see the use of an ECG while its not happening though - i really thought they would do a 24hr one.

My mother had similar symptoms last summer. It was dismissed by doctors initially as being nothing, or caused by anxiety or "all in her head". Eventually - after much pushing - they did an echo sound which showed that her heart function was much reduced. An angiogram eventually showed that she had had an infection (myocarditis) and her heart has been permanently damaged.

I am not saying this to alarm you - chances are your daughter is fine - but more to warn you not to let it go if your instincts are telling you there is more to it. I hope she is alright. Please keep us updated.

I had this so had a 48hr ECG and a stress echo cardiogram (really unpleasant) and ultrasounds. My heart is fine and it is nothing to worry about. I'm sure you daughter is fine, but do get things checked.

My son collapsed at school and the paramedics picked his irregular beat up on a 10 minute ECG.
Get her one done, it may be picked up , but i would ask for a referral as longer monitoring is the only thing that will reassure you . Also ask for an ECHO to check the structure of her heart.
