I thought dental treatment for children is free but I was charged £17 today. Very confused.

I took dd to a check up today and the dentist decided to extract her wobbly tooth. I than had to sign a paper and take to the receptionist who asked me to pay £17.50. I found it weird but wasn't sure so wanted to check first. Just checked the NHS page and it says that a person under 18 doesn't need to pay for treatment....I'm very confused, should I ask for money back?

Is your DD registered with an NHS dentist or was her dentist a private one? SHe shouldn't have been charged if NHS.

Well she has being registered there forever and I never had to pay a thing for her. I just thought at the time that they charged because the dentist extracted the tooth, but I didn't go there with this intention in mind and wouldn't let it if I knew I had to pay. Is it possible the receptionist thought I was the one who had the extraction? Should I pop there tomorrow and ask to be refunded?

I think maybe she has thought the treatment was for you. I would go back and ask

The £17.50 is the first band and covers a check up but not extraction that would have been £48.

Go back and get a refund, you may have been given the wrong paperwork to hand over!

The receptionist called me this morning apologising and asking for my card details for the refund. Phew.
