major panic, white pupil in 6 yo ds

hi, i took a few photos of my 6yo ds the other day and noticed that on one of them his pupil looked white, there is a tint of red in it also. Of course now i'm in full on panic mode. I suffer from health anxiety and i'm trying very hard to keep myself together but finding it very difficult. I have taken loads more photos since and looked at lots of other photos from the last few months and i have'nt seen it in any others.

Has anyone else had this with their dcs?

Could be an oddity from the flash and be totally nothing, could be something. I'm afraid no one on here can give you a diagnoses or valid reasurance. You need to take your ds to the gp. Hope all is well.

MineOrk · 15/01/2013 11:24

No but if you go to an optician they should have all the equipment to check the eye and hopefully set your mind at rest, or refer to GP/eye hospital if necessary.

hellymelly · 15/01/2013 11:24

If it isn't in any others then probably it was just a bit of light reflection or something, but you do need to take him to your GP and get him checked right away just in case there is a problem.

yani · 15/01/2013 11:25

Put your mind at rest by booking an appointment with an optician.

Your gp can also refer you to an eye unit at your local hospital, this can be done during your gp appointment.

Always best to get these things checked out. It might be something as simple as the light in the room where the photo was taken, or something reflecting like a window or mirror.

moojie · 15/01/2013 11:26

This has happened to my ds's before so please don't panic. If it a tumour you are worried about it would appear in every photo as its the light reflecting back off it abnormally. Takes some more photos later using the flash when your ds is looking at the camera. Red eye is fine and normal. If you are still worried will do no harm to have an eye check at the optician.

kaylasmum · 15/01/2013 11:30

we are going to take him to the optician, would i need to make an appt or do you think they would just see him there and then? so worried. i have read that it is usually in under 5's and is very rare but still terrified.

moojie - did you take your ds to the gp or optician ?

my nephew had this is two photos I took of him. It was not replicated in any of the other photos we subsequently took, and a visit to the doctor confirmed all was well.

The fact that it has not shown up on other photos is a very good sign. But take him along anyway to put your mind at rest.

yani · 15/01/2013 11:46

Kaylasmum - I'd try optician first. They have all the specialist equipment and people. I think all the GP could do is shine a light into his eye.

I'd phone them now for a day time appt, I've taken my dc during school hours and it's much quieter and easier to get an appointment before 3pm.

kaylasmum · 15/01/2013 11:53

thanks for the replies, i'm going to take asap. he's my baby, i'm so worried.

Did you take the phone on the IPhone? Because they are famous for white eye effect.

kaylasmum · 15/01/2013 13:04

Its a HTC smart phone. Got an appt at the optician today after school. So nervous! xx

How did you get on?

florry88 · 15/01/2013 21:20

hope you get on ok, Im sure it will be fine, it would be in all pics if a problem

chipmonkey · 15/01/2013 22:03

Just checking in to see if all is well. Am an optom but unfortunately didn't see this earlier.

kaylasmum · 15/01/2013 23:24

Thankfully everything went ok, the optometrist said it was something to do with the flash and the optic nerve. He took a photo of the back of the eye and showed us the optic nerve

My ds needs glasses for reading, watching tv and in school but apart from that everything is fine. Thanks to everyone for their concern.

That's a relief, kayla. I'm sure you feel like some Wine after that!

kaylasmum · 16/01/2013 10:27

hi chipmonkey, yeah its a huge relief. The whole test took almost an hour, the longest hour of my life. He's actually excited about getting glasses.

Glad you got the reassurance, it can't have been an easy hour.

Your ds will be centre of attention when he wears his new glasses to school Grin
