Mouth ulcer help - DD allergic to bonjella etc.

Actually she is allergic to lidocaine which is in all the mouth ulcer gels (age 5) and now the bonjella 'cool' is for over 16 only.

We have tried the gels that are supposed to coat the ulcer but they just slide off and taste hideous.

She gets so distressed with the pain I'm going to put in a phone call to her GP tomorrow but any at home remedies suitable for a 5 year old other than salt mouth wash much appreciated.

Also, if anyone knows any good preventative ideas too? She eats well, fruit and veggies plus takes a daily vitamin. We are due to receive a referral to GOSH soon due to her allergies so I can ask them but we just need help now, she is in such pain as they are massive poor pickle :(

Sorry, the only remedy I know is the salt mouth wash. Does your local pharmmacy have a homeopathic remendy?

Just had a look on t'interweb - the homeopathic remedy is Arsen Alb (usually a small dissolvable pill you place under the tongue). Other there mention salt; alum (find in spice aisle, wet finger and dab small amount on ulcer), oil of oregano and also tea tree oil. All seem to say their remedies taste awful! Sad

From your post it does sound like she may be getting them from an allergy - I hope your referral comes through quickly. As a ex Dr's receptionist can I suggest that you go back to your doctor and stress the fact that DD is highly distressed and in pain and could they kindly chase the referral appointment. When I was a dr's receptionist this type of request came in fairly regularly from those waiting for a referral - a good doctor will re-send the referral with a message to please find an early appointment - especially as, in this case, it is for a child.

Good luck.

Thank you for your response RoguePixie - it's really useful an do do advocate homeopathic treatments so I'll look that one up for sure.

Spoke to Dr today and he has prescribed a pain reliever spray that we will do a skin patch test first before I administer it. He is really supportive of the referral and is pushing hard for us.

Really appreciate your detailed response x

An update on this, doctor called us in today due to DD's allergies and the ulcer is now 15 days old and still raging. Turns out it is now infected (poor pickle) so onto antibiotics, not my most favourite course of action but something had to give. Will follow with a course of acidophilus of course!
