DD been poorly since October

DD who previously been to the docs about twice, now seems to be there every two weeks

She was ill on and off for most of October, we had a few days well then November was punctuated with fevers, cough and rashes

Xmas week we had more ABs after 2 weeks of her being under the weather

Last night we've had vomiting, fever and more sick this morning

Is this usual? She started Pre school in October so was expecting her to be unwell but not on this scale

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated

TIA

Yes sorry it's normal.

Ds started school in August 2011 - between then and Xmas he has slapped cheek, chickenpox, 2 tummy bugs, 2 ear infections and 2 chest infections plus goodness knows how many coughs and colds.

juneau · 13/01/2013 11:13

The first winter my DS was in nursery was hell - he had 12 illnesses in six months. We staggered from cold to cough to virus to tummy bug and back again. It was utterly miserable. After that winter though he seemed to have a better immune system.

Whilst I think it is normal to catch lots of things especially at this time of year and hopefully it'll strengthen your dds immune system I would still urge you to keep a close eye and go back to the gp if you are worried.

My dd2 (3) started pre school in september and caught everything, sore throats/ear infections/coughs/colds/sickness bug.She was constantly ill with a temp or on antibiotics.
On 31 dec she was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes which the consultant told me was most likely caused by a virus Sad .

I am sure your dd will be ok and by springtime will be a lot brighter with a stronger immune system but if at any point you feel she isn't right please see the gp-we kept going but got fobbed off a few times when actually dd was quite poorly don't mean to worry you just don't want anybody else to go through what we did (dd was misdiagnosed with a uti at first)

All the best hope your dd is better soon

Thank you everyone for replying

I was expecting snot etc but she has had everything going

My GP has been really good - am just hopeful this is all doing her immune system some good and next winter will be different

Thanks again

It is quite normal, however, it is important to stay vigilant and go back to the GP if you have concerns.

Does she eat sufficient fruit and veg (eg five portions a day, discounting potatoes)? If not, try to increase fruit and veg intake. Maybe also consider a vitamin supplement.

Good luck.

Our GD Y.1. is clear of nearly all the bugs that her friends come down with IMO because she doesn't eat dairy. I am the same and suffer symptoms of hay fever etc. as soon as I DO have some.

Agree with dikkertjedap but try giving her fruit on an empty stomach and make a pretty plate of it with her before supper. That 's good way of getting the benefit of the goodness of the fruit.

ariane5 · 13/01/2013 13:42

Not sure about the dairy link-my ds1 and dd2 do not have dairy and catch everything- I wondered if they were missing something that was lowering their immunity by having a restricted diet due to allergies?

I have heard though that dairy products make colds worse-my mum would never let us have milk to drink as children if we had a cold.

rubyslippers · 13/01/2013 13:49

She's a reasonable eater

Picky and small amounts but she does eat fruit, veg etc

She has very little dairy except for milk on cereal

This all coincided with me stopping Breastfeeding her as well

ariane try giving them their fruit as I said above on an empty stomach and maybe a kelp supplement also cook their food with olive oil which according to Liz Earle is brilliant for DCs as it is for everyone else!

ariane5 · 13/01/2013 14:35

Will try fruit with ds1 and see if it helps. Can't do it with dd2 as any fruit has to be eaten with a meal because of her medicine.

Rubyslippers-might have a lot to do with stopping bf as I noticed when bf dcs that as soon as they stopped they caught a lot more colds/viruses etc.

I give dcs multivitamin+iron supplement everyday as I've heard that being short on iron can lead to more illnesses.
