To take dd2 to A&E or wait until the morning?

Dd2 has ASD, she has a wobbly tooth but has tried to pull it out herself (even though its not ready), she has been bleeding for quite a while, i cleaned her up before bed, she was covered in blood, her face, her hands and the furniture. She's now asleep and i have just been up to check her and her face is covered in dark red blood which has trickled down her neck and onto the sheets, she's sucking a dummy which must be knocking on her tooth and making it worse but i' afraid if i take the dummy away she will choke on the blood.

What do i do?

Should i wake her and take her to A&E so they can remove it? i have tried to pull it out mself but just cant do it (dh wont even try). If i clean her up she's going to wake up but i cant leave her covered in blood Sad.

as long as she is comfortable, i wouldn't take her anywhere now. but i would keep checking to see if the bleeding stops. Even a little blood can make alot of mess. Does it seem as tho it's stopping?

Could you ring your local paediatric A & E unit and ask if they would want to see her?

Marne · 10/01/2013 22:08

It seems to be drying up, i will go and have a closer look (its a bit grewsome) Sad.

A small amount of blood in the mouth can look a lot when mixed with saliva. How old is she?

Marne · 10/01/2013 22:12

Seems to have stoped bleeding, tried to clean her up but she wouldn't let me, at least when she's asleep she's not messing around with it. She hasnt got a dentist and my dentist isn't exactly ASD friendly. Where should i take her to get it pulled out?

That sounds like too much blood to me, I'd ring nhs direct.

Marne · 10/01/2013 22:13

She's 6

Is there a risk of her waking in the night and doing further damage while you are asleep?

It might be best to get it sorted or seek professional advice now.

VivaLeBeaver · 10/01/2013 22:22

Most towns have an emergency dentist for people without a dentist which you can access tomorrow.

Marne · 10/01/2013 22:32

She wont wake now until around 5am (i hope) as she is medicated, though she often wakes at 2am. A&E is almost an hours drive and i realy dont want to go unless i have to. I think the nearest emergancy dentist is at the hospital. I have a dentist but they are not great (hard to explain to them that she has Autism as their english is not good), tbh she will probably need sedation to get it out as she wont let anyone near her (she kicked the optician last week when they tried to put drops in her eyes).

Nothings ever easy with her Sad

Marne, to put your mind at rest why don't you call an emergency dental surgery now and have a chat with them.

A&E isn't the place for your DD but it would be a good idea to get advice while she is peaceful.

I hope it all works out ok x

Marne · 10/01/2013 23:05

Thank you Blue, i dont think the emergancy dentist is open now until 9am (not 24 hour here), i might phone my gp first thing and see if a nurse can try and pull it out as dd2 will be happier there (as she knows them). She's ment to be back at the opticians tomorrow too as she could not complete the eye test last time, poor dd2 isn't going to have a good day tomorrow (and neither will i).

Wishing you a better day and some extra strength to deal with it all. You really are a super mum and your DD is lucky to have you x

Il check back tomorrow evening to see how your day has been

cestlavielife · 11/01/2013 00:02

You need to get referred to specialist paed dentist/community dentist /special needs dentist . ask your gp to refer you.

I would leave her it prob just looks like a lot of blood.

cestlavielife · 11/01/2013 00:06

Postpone the eye testing or do up to the time she gets stressed and then leave it. Need to build it up. Need to get her comfortable.

We have fantastic sn dentist my son has ASD who works in his school getting students to go from just getting in the room for five seconds saying hello and leaving thru over time sitting In chair and being examined. It needs dentist willing to cooperate and take it slow. Your pct should have a specialist paed sn dentist .

Thank you Blue Smile.

She has woken up, tooth is still there but bleeding has stopped, she's still messing around with it but so far it seems ok, going to see if it drops out today, if it starts bleeding today i will take her to the dentist, i will try and find her a dentist today (will phone her pead as i need to phone them anyway).

We will go to the opticians after school instead (hopfully it will be easier this time) Smile. We got referred to a sn optician but the waiting list is 3 months (and she's banging into doors as her glasses are broke).

If you have a school nurse, they will refer you to dentist for future apts. also put you in touch for an emergency today. Best of luck with your day marne

Marne · 11/01/2013 10:45

Thank you Hooley- i'm not sure who our school nurse is, i think theres one that covers several schools (as schools in this area are tiny).
