DTD Failed Hearing Test in Reception Class today

The school nurse has just rang to let us know that DTD has failed a basic hearing test today. I am a little worried as I feel that we should have noticed any problems before now.

The test involved DTD wearing headphones and being asked to clap when she heard a sound. She could hear the high frequency but not the low in her right ear. As she failed the test in the right ear they didn't proceed with the left as they don't wish to cause any distress.

She is being referred to the hospital for a full diagnostic test.

Can anyone share similar experiences

Did they check for wax or inflammation before the test was carried out?

My DS failed the sight test in reception and several of his friends failed both the sight and hearing tests. The optometrist we saw on referral to the hospital said she sees about 1/3 of the class for re-testing. His sight was perfect when tested in the hospital. None of his friends who got called for a hearing test had any problems either. Sometimes it's the environment that makes it difficult for them to pass the test; sometimes they get distracted. She said she tends to see more boys than girls as they can't concentrate.

I think you have to wait for the referral to the hospital and see what happens. If you don't have any concerns, chances are it's just one of those anomalies.

Not hearing but DS1 had a sight test in reception and we had a letter home telling us he was almost blind in one eye! I felt awful and we genuinely hadn't noticed a thing although of course then noticed all the time once we were aware of the issue.

He had to wear a patch for two years every day, morning til night. He's now fine, no squint, eye strength pretty much the same in both eyes. He will always have to wear glasses but that's fine.

Please don't feel bad about not knowing or noticing. That's why they do the tests, you're not a professional.

Hope it's good news.

She might just have glue ear and need grommets.

School Nurse didn't mention if she had checked for wax/inflammation. Hearing test at birth was fine.

Her attention span isn't great but she is doing well with her phonics however a couple of times she has asked for the volume on the TV to be turned up.

She could have glue ear, its very common. My ds is 4 (starts school in sept) and he has a hearing loss for which he wears aids and this was diagnosed at birth and confirmed a few weeks later, his loss is mild/moderate and is very subtle, his loss is in the high and mid frequency and if it had not of been for the newborn screening we would not of known till delayed speech. As for tests i can tell you what they do with my son. He sits in a room with 2 audiologists and listens for sounds that are fed into the room all decibels and frequencies and puts a brick in the box for every sound he has heard, they have just started with the headphones on him, i just sit and watch as i am not allowed to interact with him during his tests. They can check for glue ear by using a type of puffer that they blow into the ear (sorry don't know what its called) Really don't worry my son loves going and doing "good listening" and he has seen the same people since he was 4 weeks old, I would check out a website called NDCS as they have a section all on hearing tests and what happens, hope this helps.

Thanks for all your informative and reassuring replies. I just felt as if we had let her down by not spotting a problem.

Don't feel bad. My dd1 's hearing problem was only noticed because of her poor speech. I never noticed a problem. She has grommets now and her hearing is fine.
