Bottom hurts, but only at night

Daughter (4) has been complaining the last few nights that her bottom hurts, but only at night, after going to bed.

When asked where exactly it hurts she points at her vulva. There's no complaints in day time, when she wees or anything, no visible rash or soreness. Her tummy doesn't hurt and she doesn't run a temperature either, so I don't think it's a UTI.

Last night it was so bad, that I was just contemplating whether to phone the out of hours when she finally settled after a dose of ibuprofen. I don't think she was acting it for attention, but she seemed to be genuinly distressed by it, and tossing and turning. This morning she was fine.

I hope it won't return tonight, but am expecting it, not sure whether to take her to the doctors - she's not showing any symptoms at all during the day.

Any idea what this could be?

ILikeWhisperingToo · 06/01/2013 17:10

sleepyhead · 06/01/2013 17:10

Sounds like threadworms tbh. Sorry!

DearOldWrinklyMum · 06/01/2013 17:10

worms.

carpetsw33per · 06/01/2013 17:11

Definitely threadworms

WidowWadman · 06/01/2013 17:14

But woudn't the pain be then at the backside rather than at the front? Is worms a doctor's job or can I get something OTC?

OTC medicine - ...for all the family I'm afraid...

carpetsw33per · 06/01/2013 17:17

They migrate from the anus to vagina to lay eggs.

Over the counter but you will need to set fire to whole house to get rid of them. (well, do a shed load of washing). Google it or pick up a leaflet from pharmacist.

Do get her the tablets as soon as you can - it cam be very unpleasant.

mercibucket · 06/01/2013 17:17

worms - they get wander up the wrong way with girls as well hence the itching there
grim i know Confused Confused

sittinginthesun · 06/01/2013 17:17

Threadworms - just pop to the chemist and ask for tablets (Ovex, I think they're called? Should know, we've had two lots in 2012).

ILikeWhisperingToo · 06/01/2013 17:17

I believe there is a sure-fire way to find out, involving a torch.
Dose of OTC medicine - haven't had the pleasure myself - and boil wash of all sheets, towels etc.

moogalicious · 06/01/2013 17:18

Worms can enter the vagina at night.

WidowWadman · 06/01/2013 17:18

The rapidity and unanimousness of responses means I better go and see a pharmacist then, I guess. Thanks.

Oh - another question - the internet suggest to see a doctor when child is under 2, but also to treat the whole family. The hurty-bottomed daughter is 4, but her sister is only 19 months. So what do I do now?

Tell the pharmacist. They will probably give you Ovex for you and your older daughter (you need to be treated too) and Pripsen for the younger one.
