Rash on feet and generally unwell - can anyone shed any light?

DS2 has been off colour for 3 days - went down very suddenly one morning. Had been screaming with laughter and bouncing around on the wii (he's 6), then half an hour later was curled up in a chair, pale, not up to doing anything. DS1 has had a shocking cold so I assumed DS2 coming down with the same. He's still rough - looks very pale and wan, and was slightly sick on Friday afternoon - hadn;t eaten much, thankfully, so there wasn't a lot to come up. Def not norvovirus, as hasn't been sick again and has managed 2 lots of beans on toast today, not interested in anything else at all. Bit of a temperature, little bit of a cold not much, BUT a rash of little red spots on his feet - he's been complaining "I've been bitten" and says they're very itchy. A few little red spots on his back, too - but very faint. Spots haven;t changed appearance or blistered. I thought a flea bite at first, but they don't look like flea bites. He's generally itchy all over but the spots are very faint. I've no idea what it is - he's had chicken pox, and the spots haven't developed at all, otherwise that would have been my bet. Weird. He's a little bit brighter this afternoon but then goes downhill and curls up on the sofa again. Any ideas?

I'd call NHS direct - rashes always worry me! Have you done the meningitis tests (sensitive to light, can't put his chin to his chest)? Doesn't sound like meningitis but that's what I would want to rule out.

could be Hand, Foot & Mouth - when DD and DS had this they were the same: generally unwell for a few days and then the rash came out (mostly in the obvious areas but some on the general body area as well). DD's spots were mainly on her feet, but she had a few in her mouth as well - might be worth checking your DS for the same.

My first thought on reading your post was Hand, Foot & Mouth too.

Hand foot and mouth. Does he have blisters in his mouth. My ds got the feet blisters and nothing else. I got the mouth blisters.....it was awful.

a lot of viruses give spots so could just be a non descript virus

obv glass test etc

hope he s better soon

Thanks ladies, out of hours doc gave him a good check over and said it's a viral infection. Spots are ok, not the dodgy sort. But told me I was right to have it checked. Needless to say DS was bouncing around in the waiting room as right as rain, and is now laying on the sofa looking wan....

Didn't mention hand foot and mouth but I'll bear it in mind, thank you.
