Nighttime / Naptime cough??

dS (2) had a bad throat infection in late Nov. Since then has had runny nose but no other cold symptoms so we figure winter + nursery = runny nose.

However has for past 8 weeks had nighttime and Naptime cough. Dry sounding, sometimes has coughing fit, not every night / nap, no other cough / wheezing in day including when running round park etc.

We thought pobably just ongoing viral cough - but it's been about 8 weeks now - when do we take to GP? Bit concerned about asthma but also bit concerned about misdiagnosis of asthma?

To add - he's not distressed and it doesn't seem to affect sleep ie not waking with it.

Thanks in advance!

Nighttime cough been driving me bonkers too. DS (3) been coughing at night for about two months - sometimes literally all night sort of every ten seconds. I guess it's with every breath. He'll cough through his sleep but everyone else is awake...

Finally took him to dr on Thurs. he gave us antibiotics just in case there is a residual infection. If still no better after that he said we can think about an X-ray although I think I would wait a few more months for that. Im guessing its actually a virus and Some of these viral coughs can go on for months.

That's what we figured - saw GP this AM who said viral cough, load this year lasting months apparently - glad no mention of asthma as no other symptoms. Chest clear so seeing how it goes and have paediatric linctus (not glycerin cough medicine) which is apparently more effective - slightly skeptical as I think all cough meds are soothing but ineffective but will give it a go!

Will let you know if it helps - the linctus is OTC.

totally agree on cough meds. They are all useless but feel as if they will do you good because are sort of soothing feeling iyswim. A colleague at work who is highly sceptical normally recommended Nelson's Sootha which is homeopathic - I don't belive in that stuff and nor does she but she said it really did help her two. So if the antibiotics don't do anything I might try that. Otherwise I think we're in your camp - assume viral bug and sit it out.

Ah will have a look for Nelsons - used them a teething powders despite not believing a thing about homeopathy - but DS never has a single whinge from teething....!
