Is there actually a link between teething and nappy rash?

My DD (18mo) seems to be getting a couple of teeth at the moment, she has been red cheeked for at least two weeks now.

At the same time she has had a really sore red patch on her genitals for a couple of weeks now, have been alternating between conotrane cream and sudocreme, both of which soothe it for a bit but then the next day it will flare up just as bad. I'm hearing good things about metanium, is this worth a try? I have also got some plain old zinc and castor oil cream from my local pharmacy but this does not have much of an impact.

I try to give as much nappy free time, but obviously at 18mo she is very mobile runs around alot (and occasionally piddles on my rug :o)

Am I doing something wrong? I feel like such a terrible mummy everytime I pull a nappy off and see she's sore again :( Any tips gratefully received.

We use bepanthan for dd, prefer it to Metanium. She always gets sore, how you describe, when teething and her wee smells. Someone told me it gets more acidic or something when they teeth, don't know if that's true

SpottyTeacakes · 05/01/2013 16:42

Oh and you're not doing anything wrong!

TheSecretCervixDNCOP · 05/01/2013 16:44

Thank you SpottyTeacakes . :)

Very normal for some toddlers... including my dd. also loss of appetite, serious grumpiness and disturbed sleep.
Metanium did the trick for us regards nappy rash.

We also found that capol did not even touch the sides, infant nurofen liquid worked quicker, more effectively and meant we gave her less medication in the long run.

RetroMaggie · 05/01/2013 16:50

Calpol not capol

My DD is younger than yours at 10 months but we regularly use Sudacreme as a barrier cream on an evening but as soon as she begins to look redder than usual down there we bring out the metanium and by the morning it is usually completely clear again. Swear by the stuff!

Apologies this does not answer your question, but may help you decide how to treat it?! Smile

She seems okay pain wise, doesn't tend to make much of a fuss, just gets a bit grumpy and the red cheeks. It's just the nappy rash that flares up every time a tooth starts appearing.

Some kids have more sensitive bums than others. One of mine nearly bled if left in a nappy for more than a minute, the other had a teflon bum and could have sat in his own poo for an hour (not that I tried this!).

Don't beat yourself up over it. But you can do things like metanium (there's a really good US nappy rash cream called something like 'Bum Cream' - someone else might be able to remember what it's called, you can get it on line and it's fab), nappy free time, cutting down on acidic food and drink (e.g. fruit juices, citrus fruit, tomatoes etc). Clearly prompt nappy changes help, but I'm sure you're on the case already.

When babies and toddlers are teething, they are producing far more saliva, and I reead that it does make their wee more acid, FWIW.

This too will pass!

Yes Poppins, I tend to put sudocreme on at night as a barrier, as it takes longer to soak into her skin especially as she is normally in that nappy longer.

We use weleda baby nappy cream and it's amazing. Available from boots or online. Really helps.

buttpaste.com American friends swear by it. Think you might find it on ebay or if you have US contacts, get them to post it over.

TheSecretCervixDNCOP · 07/01/2013 20:26

Have no US contacts but if the metanium doesn't do the job I will definitely look into that, lego. Thank you.

Sore patch still there fades and reappears between each nappy change so will be changing to water and cotton wool instead of baby wipes tommorow and metanium on wednesday (soonest I am able to buy it :()

Thanks to all for advice given on thread.

If you live in scotland, ask for metanium through the minor ailments scheme at your local pharmacy so you dont have to pay for it.

Willdoitinaminute · 07/01/2013 22:59

Waitrose bottom butter it is olive oil based and has calendula in it I think. Smells like white chocolate and works.
I did have a theory about assoc with teething. Teething tends to coincide with weening when their gut bacteria are changing and they are being introduced to new foods. Often fruit & veg purée s are the main foods given which probably alter the ph of their wee. They are also getting bigger and probably wee output greater so maybe need changing more frequently particularly if you use cloth nappies.
Observational not scientific theory but I found that using vast amounts of creams made it worse. Make sure use small amount on dry skin and spread into thin barrier layer.

Rollmops · 08/01/2013 10:42

The only connection between teething and nappy rash is the fact that babies' gums itch/hurt when teething and they tend to stuff everything/anything in their mouths to relieve the discomfort. Chewing on Daddy's shoe or similar, obviously results in greater contact with bacteria/viruses than daintily nibbling on a sterilised teether. Many bacteria/viruses cause, often, diarrhea which in turn, causes nappy rash.
Bepanthen is the way to go.

Rollmops · 08/01/2013 10:44

Metanium is even better. [searches ailing memory].

Happiestinwellybobs · 08/01/2013 10:48

We has exactly the same problem - someone said that all the drool causes acidity in her urine, hence the rash. DD's was bleeding too. I swear by the yellow metanium. It cleared it up in no time.

whatsforyou · 08/01/2013 11:03

There is supposed to be no reason why babies have nappy rash when teething but it is the only time my ds ever has a sore bottom and the only thing that works is metanium!
