Headlice - how small is small?

My daughter is really scratching her head at night and I wonder if she has nits. But i have checked and checked and cannot see anything. I'm not sure how small they would be or really what I'm looking for. How many would she have?

Any advice? Thanks very much

Baby Goo's looked like thunderflies.

I remember then being bigger than that, but hey ho. Maybe they are adapted to her tiny thin hair.

And I can't see them until they are immobilised with that oily spray stuff.

Dededum · 04/01/2013 17:56

Don't bother with the lotions. Get yourself a nitty gritty comb (about 10 pounds)
Wash hair and then cover with conditioner and then let the fun begin.

I did both boys yesterday, such fun.

If you look under natural light, or with a torch, you may see more. Even then they can be hard to spot unless they're really crawling all over.

Best bet is to do the wet combing with some white kitchen towel - the lice or the eggs will soon show up then if they're there.

dedum I can't see them in the conditioner. I was thinking that the oil stuff is basically baby oil, I might try her with that, I know it'll be a bitch to wash out, but the lyclear is already.

would the nitty gritty work on really fine hair.

EdwiniasRevenge · 04/01/2013 18:26

Nitty gritty is fab fab fab.

Take a pint glass of water and rinse the comb after each section. At the end look up through the bottom of the glass. It will be obvious. The crawlers (which I call adult lice) will be unmistakable, about 2mm long. You may also see some babies which you may just about be able to so legs. Then there will be liitle tiny dark brown cigar shaped flecks. These are the eggs.

Pulls out the lice and nits on fine hair cos teeth are corkscrew shaped and physically touch.

If you use the pint glass works fine with conditioner.

Another vote for the Nitty Gritty,

DD has really fine hair and it works for us, it's a guilty pleasure Blush

I am almost disappointed that it only took a week for her to be clear of them. Grin

Thanks for the advice. I've looked really hard this evening and I don't think she has them. But a very itchy scalp nonetheless

I have purchased a nitty gritty comb.

I like to think that merely having an overpriced nit comb in my house will kind of ward them off :)

sausagesandwich34 · 04/01/2013 22:38

which shampoo do you use?

dd was constantly scratching, teachers asked me to check her hair I was mortified but she was just itchy

damn you treseme!

Goldmandra · 06/01/2013 14:20

You will rarely see them by looking through the hair. You need to put conditioner on the hair and pull a nit comb through it. I agree with previous posters that the Nitty Gritty is the best for making sure they are all removed but you will detect them with a normal cheap plastic one.

Don't rely on finding them by searching the hair. The infestation has to be pretty bad before there's a good chance of finding them that way.

nappydaysagain · 06/01/2013 18:58

Funny you should say that sausage as treseme gave me an itchy head too. I was convinced I had headlice when I was using it!
