absence seizures in 2 year old

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone was in or has been in the same position as me with absence seizures, my 2 year old has been having what appears to be 'absence seizures' for the last few weeks, he has been seen by lots of health professionals (including a GP who witnessed an episode) who all feel its this apart from the doctor we saw in a clinic who wants video evidence before making a diagnosis!

We have an EEG booked for next week and then the consultant the week after but I'm really worrying its something awful and so stressed about the whole thing. I was told by this one doctor that it was unlikely to be absence seizures as it normally affects children over the age of 4 but I've been told its not impossible so it could be the case.

Thanks

ds was dx at 4 with absence seizures by eeg and by observation by a specialist but was almost certainly having them for a year or more before they got picked up (ds has autism so we thought the zoning out was due to that).

see if you can get some video footage of your ds having an absence and the period before and after to show the consultant.

it is the most likely explanation but it is also totally natural to worry - be kind to yourself

Thanks for your reply, I managed to get some footage the other day which I have shown to a few consultants (I work in a hospital) who all agree its absence seizures so I guess as long as the EEG shows something that's what it's likely to be.
The waiting is horrible!!

Just be aware that the eeg may not be conclusive. I've been told that plenty of people have epilepsy with normal eegs.

Sometimes a bit quiet here but there are many posters on the special needs: children board who have experience of epilepsy. Even if your ds doesn't have SN we're a very inclusive bunch Smile
