As the old thread is filling up I thought I would get a new one started!

This thread is for anyone with a child with asthma, or asthma type symptoms. Between us we have to much experience of inhalers, nebulisers, steroids, sats and all things asthma!

Well that - that is awful. I would arrange a meeting with the school to put a plan in place and make it very clear they should never refuse her inhaler.

I have arranged with school that DS always has 4 puffs of ventolin before PE and then his inhaler goes into the hall incase he needs more during (with very clear instructions if it gets to 10 puffs to get me!)

Welcome mrsshrek - hope things get controlled for her soon.

Well that - I'd be fuming, I dont think people realise how severe asthma is until they have been in this situation, I know I certainly didn't! A meeting with school is in order!!

Welcome back! The dreaded time of year is upon is again Hmm DS seems to be holding up ok, been on inhalers this week but coping well

Hope everyone is ok

WellThatsLife · 03/10/2013 10:02

Dd had double games wednes afternoon, sent her in with a note saying that I didn't want her doing the lesson as she had ended up on a nebuliser after the previous days lesson. She got an apology from the teacher who I think will take more notice in the future so will see how things go.
She is supposed to be starting cross country after half term, we're playing by ear but if her asthma doesn't improve I'm wary about her doing it

Badvoc · 03/10/2013 19:08

Hi everyone.
Hope the little ones are doing ok?
Ds2 is now in his 2nd lot of ABs since the start of term :( this time it's tonsillitis.
Sigh.
And his hospital appt has been moved but only by a week so now 7th nov.
I have ordered some sachets of pro biotic for him for when he completes his 10 days of penicillin to help his gut recover (hopefully)
Haven't been posting much but am thinking of you all x

BrandybuckCurdlesnoot · 04/10/2013 18:47

Well - I'm glad you're daughter got an apology and that they will now be a lot more cautious with her asthma during PE. What the teacher did was awful. It could have turned out much worse, your poor daughter and poor you.

Badvoc - Hope you're little one is better soon.

Since my son has been put back on to his preventer 2 weeks ago, his peak flow has risen to just below 200 in the AM and just above in the PM and he hasn't had to use his reliever at all. Keeping our fingers crossed that the colds and chest infections will stay at bay for a while.

Well, I would be getting him checked out of he were mine.
Throat clearing could be so many things but added to the limit in g would concern me.
Did he ever suffer with reflux? That can cause throat clearing.

moanyhole · 05/10/2013 04:53

hi all.wondering if i can join.awake with coughing dd.she is 41/2.diagnosed with athsma this summer after a couple of bad winters of croup and chest infections.she was on becotide and ventolin but the paed who diagnosed her in july changed that to flixotide and ventolin as needed.whenever all three of my children get a cold her two siblings are fine but it usually ends up as a chest infection with dd.
she has had a temp since tuesday and this is her 4th night of coughing so its off to the GP in the am.she is not eating well and has missed school this week.
i hate giving her so many antibiotics but what can i do?dh dosent share my concern re antibiotics but 4 to 5 lots each winter cant be good can it?
dd dosent wheeze, she coughs esp after running but the flixotide does seem to have helped control that when she is otherwise well.it just every cold she catches ends up in her chest.
i dont know, what im asking really.im tired from no sleep.i am sleeping in her room as she has had some attacks before at night when sick.im going through some amount of ventolin this week!

moanyhole · 05/10/2013 04:59

actually 2 questions if ye dont mind.
would it be an idea for dd to get the flu jab? im in ireland and its not routinely given but would it help prevent some of the chest infections?
also with the spacer she breathes into it.is that ok? i can feel air coming up through the inhaler itself but thats the way we were shown

Badvoc · 05/10/2013 07:40

My sons paed gave him a profilactic course of ABs over the winter for 3 years and it really did make he world of differnece.
I am hoping. He will do the same for ds2 tbh.
He took 7.5 mils of azithromycin a week (so tiny dose really).
I would really rcommend the flu jab too...ds2 had flu last year (prior to asthma dx) and was really ill.

MrsShrek3 · 05/10/2013 07:42

fwiw flu jab offered to all asthmatics here but after a bad experience with it kicking off allergic reactions for one of my lot we don't take up the offer.
had to put dd back on her montelukast. she can't get her breath after coughing fits and actually begged for the cherry medicine back, I'd reduced it with asthma nurse agreement a week ago. It's evil stuff tho isn't it Sad

Badvoc · 05/10/2013 07:52

The flu jab will not stop her getting chest infections btw...it will cover her against the most virulent strains of flu doing the rounds.
As I said, ds2 had it last year and was very very poorly.
My 2 are both booked in for theirs.

Sirzy · 05/10/2013 07:54

DS always has his flu jab. He had his first one when he was under 1 and I won't stop any time soon, a common cold can floor him so dread to think what flu would do.

On that note, if any of your LOs are offered the nasal spray check very carefully they can have it as it isn't suitable for severe asthmatics.

I would...drs can be very blasé wrt children ime.

cedmonds · 05/10/2013 13:01

Arghhh Ds asthma is playing up he has had attacks the past two nights. Last night i wasn't here and dh couldn't be bothered to give him VentolinAngry He never takes it seriously even when ds is in hospital he still thinks its a waste of time. So it took longer to get him sorted. Gp has faxed GOSH to see if there is anything else he can have or if they want to see him earlier. How is everyone else doing.

moanyhole · 05/10/2013 20:51

thanks everyone for the replies.brought her to the out of hours doc and she is on distaclor.bad chest inf.
ill bring to to usual doc during the week to enquire about flu jab.
ive tried so much but one thing that has helped is the salin plus therapy.not sure if anyone here has heard of it but her symptoms overall have improved with it, in case thats of any interest to anyone here.

cedmonds · 05/10/2013 23:10

Ds has another chest infection git pred and antibiotics and 10 puff of ventolin every four hours got to go back if that isnt holding him

Badvoc · 06/10/2013 08:19

Sorry to hear that, ced....why doesn't your dh take your sons asthma seriously?!
Moany, glad she is getting treatment. Do enquire about the jab...clinics are open now.

cedmonds · 06/10/2013 09:25

I dont know Badvoc. He never has!! It really frustrating as when he is ill i feel i can never leave him with him as he wouldnt do anything about an attack etc..
Moany hows dd

Sirzy · 06/10/2013 09:39

Hope all the poorly ones are doing ok now.

DS is plodding still, any attempts to reduce ventolin at all fail but he is coping ok with most day to day things with that so will just have to wait and see how it goes. He is back at the consultant in 3 weeks so perhaps something else needs jiggling to get the ventolin down.

OP posts:
moanyhole · 06/10/2013 23:34

badvoc ill definately look into thejabthank you.
cedmonds dh is very blase about some things too but in fairness to him he is good with the inhalers.it must be incredibly frustrating.he dosent seem to realise how serious it can be by the sound of things.

dd is a bit better.ate a small amount.sheis like a bag of weasels she is so cross.dh says its,a great sign that she is back to herself!

Badvoc · 07/10/2013 07:19

Bag of weasels! :)
Ha.
Always a good sign when they have the energy for a temper :)
Ds2 and the ret of us went on a 2 mile hike round a local NT property yesterday (all flat, no hills)....he managed fine, although a bit tired.
Only 3 weeks left of term...fingers x he makes it without any more time off.
Started the probiotic sachets today to help his gut recover from the ABs....

Badvoc · 07/10/2013 08:22

Spoke to soon...says he has a headache and doesn't feel well.
Cosmic.
This is the same week last year it all kicked off.
He is supposed of have his flu jab next week....it's not going to happen is it? :(

cedmonds · 07/10/2013 10:12

Badvoc Hopefully he can still have his flu jab. Da was ment to be having his tomorrow. But that isn't going to happen with his chest the way it is! Ended up in A+E last night. He got taken in by ambulance had a neb then then put in a room and forgotten about !! They then did t listen to Ny of his history. We are going the gp today
