As the old thread is filling up I thought I would get a new one started!

This thread is for anyone with a child with asthma, or asthma type symptoms. Between us we have to much experience of inhalers, nebulisers, steroids, sats and all things asthma!

Hi all.
Glad everyone seems to be doing better.
Ds2 is ok...still coughing but no temps, no vomiting and not really wheezing although his chest still sounds crackly.
Hopefully back to school on Monday!
He has an appt to be checked over on Thursday morning by a more experienced gp so will see what she says.

WellThatsLife · 14/09/2013 22:49

Been sat in a+e with dd1 for 2+hours now. Got a cold on thurs and went downhill rapidly tonight. First lot of nebs didn't do much so am waiting to ser what this lot does. Her asthma rarely gets this bad when it does it happens rapidly

WellThatsLife · 15/09/2013 15:38

OHforDUCKScake · 15/09/2013 19:32

Hello, Ive been pointed in this direction for my sons asthma.

We are about to start Ketotifen as the steroid inhalers arent keeping his asthma under control anymore.

I wondered if anyone had any experience with this drug, particularly in toddlers?

Tournesol · 15/09/2013 19:37

Hello lovely people,

Wondering if you can give me some advice about my DS as I feel really confused about his asthma, or if it even is asthma!

Will try and give a quick ish potted history: DS is 3 and has dairy, egg, sesame, nut, cat and dog allergy. He also has had a number of viral wheeze episodes and also lots of nighttime coughing.

Doctor has been seeing him for about a year now and has diagnosed him as asthmatic. Thing is if he takes his preventer he is mostly fine and rarely needs the salbutamol. So then I start thinking, maybe it isn't asthma and stop giving him the brown but then he starts coughing so I start again and so it goes on.

Then just the other night he got croup, awful barking cough, so took him back to doctors and even though he had croup dr said his asthma not exasperated which made me think, maybe he isn't asthmatic then. So he got two days worth of soluble steroids which cleared the croup but he has an awful cold and is back to his constant dry cough.

I just feel so worried about him and hate giving steroids as he is already extremely small for his age (despite me and DH both being tall and both his siblings being big) but then it seems as long as he is on the brown he is ok.

Anyone got any advice? Does it sound like asthma to you? Shall I keep up the brown preventer? So confused! Thanks for reading my now epic post...

Sirzy · 15/09/2013 19:43

well hope you are home properly soon

ohfor I haven't heard of it sorry. How old is he and what is he on at the moment?

tour the fact the brown inhaler is helping to stabilise him sounds like he does have asthma but its good that he is being kept so well with it most of the time. I would keep up the inhaler.

OHforDUCKScake · 15/09/2013 19:50

Tours quite simply, your son has asthma. He is displaying typical symptoms.

Is good the brown inhaler is helping, my 2.4 year old has the constant cough and nothing is helping.

Sirzy he is 2.4 and currently on Clenil maximum dose for his age, antihistamines (tonnes of allergies) Salbutamol on the nebuliser (the inhaler doesnt cut the mustard) and prednisolone 5 tablets when needed.

OHforDUCKScake · 15/09/2013 19:51

Oh! I just read that back tours it sounded arsey, it absolutely wasnt meant to.

Sirzy · 15/09/2013 19:57

Have they tried seretide and montelukast Ohfor? Clenil did nothing for DS who has bad asthma but not as bad as your sons but the seretide and montelukast (together with the cetrizine) has helped make him more stable than he was.

OP posts:
OHforDUCKScake · 15/09/2013 20:14

He is on cetirizine. Does that help asthma? Because Ive reduced that recently (generally less hives).

We tried Momtelukast, with horrific side effects. Never, ever again.

I mentioned Seretide to the consultant but I think he said he was too young.

I think, it was noisy and we were on the phone.

Sirzy · 15/09/2013 20:17

Seretide isn't licenced in under 4s but is used, DS was under 3 when he started on it he is 4 in November and is already on the highest dose for an under 12 (or 16 I cant remember)

DS was put on citrizine specifically to help his asthma, he is on 10mls a day which has helped him a lot, most of his triggers are environmental ones which are harder to avoid so I think thats why the antihistamine has helped a lot with that side of things.

OP posts:
lollipoppi · 15/09/2013 20:18

Well - hope you have a better night tonight!

Ohforduck - I haven't heard of that one before! Must be worth a shot of the others are not working, DS (2.10) is on seritide 50 and, until recently, montelukast, both worked really well to keep his asthma under control

Tour - sounds like asthma to me, I would definatly be giving the brown inhaler every day even if he seems to be ok, it's obviously doing its job by keeping it under control

WellThatsLife · 15/09/2013 20:22

They let her home for a couple of hours but we're back in now as they want to watch her over night. chest and peak flow seem to be improving now do hopefully things are settling down

Sirzy · 15/09/2013 20:24

Fingers crossed you get back home tomorrow well

OP posts:
OHforDUCKScake · 15/09/2013 20:26

Ah then I need to get back on it with the cetririzine. I had no idea, I wonder if that has contributed..... It is about the same time.

Im surprised he never mentioned seretide as an option, he was a consultant at Guys hospital.

At least its another option if the cetirizine and/or ketotifen doesn help.

Sirzy · 15/09/2013 20:29

Worth a try! Hope you find a solution that works for him!
