Sorry- DS2 with high temp and very sore looking eyes

DS2 who is 10, woke up yesterday morning complaining of a sore head. He looked very flushed so realized he had a temperature and have dosed him up with Calpol. He was up and down all day yesterday, sometimes a bit perky, sometimes a bit lethargic, and started with a very bunged up and snotty nose. He was still eating

Today he is worse. His eyes are sore and red but not excreting anything in the way that conjunctivis does. He woke at 6am with a high temperature and so I gave him calpol again. He's has been eating today but not that interested. He has also had a bit of diahorrea but not lots. I'm presuming that's from the high temperature I'm not sure
He has been in bed most of the day,and I gave him some more calpol at 3pm. I've just been into him and his face and eyes are still flushed and red and his temperature is 39.6.
It's the red sore eyes that are really puzzling me, his whole face is red really. I've tried to get him to take ibuprofen as well but he can;t stand the taste.

So I think I'll ring OOH, or nhs direct, as it's a bit of a puzzling not straighforward illness. Any ideas???

Sounds like what dd has. Do try and get him to take ibuprofen - paracetamol isn't bringing her temp down but the ibuprofen is. She's quite sad though...

Dd (6) has had this since tuesday. Temps up and down every day, sore eyes. Also cough and sore throat. It's a bit of a lingerer I'm afraid. Today is her first day without a temp but she's still ill. There are a few threads on this in children's health. Calpol and nurofen in rotation is the best you can do I think

AFingerofFudge · 23/12/2012 17:24

oh gawd my kids specialise in waiting until an event to get ill - we've had tonsillitis and chicken pox at Christmas before, two holidays in hospital rather than on holiday, sickness before birthdays, and DS1 in hospital with bronchilitis when it was Millenium Eve. Sigh.
Poor DS2 is just sitting in bed crying saying "I don't want to be poorly for Christmas".
Have now phoned OOH and waiting for a call back. Thanks for replies

Has he been immunised against measles?

Does he have a rash anywhere else, or any white spots inside his mouth?

3littlefrogs · 23/12/2012 17:27

Although 10 is a bit old for measles.

AFingerofFudge · 23/12/2012 17:28

yes he is up to date with his immunisations. My neighbour asked me that a few minutes ago as she knows someone with measles who lives locally.
No other rash, just around the eyes really.

No advice here but I have DD8 who is going through exactly same symptoms. I'm doing the Calpol and Nurofen in rotation so that she has something helping with temp. She has a massive cough today now too.

BTW docs on Friday said lots of similar things going around. Calpol/nurofen and clear fluids and rest. Kiddie Flu by sounds of it. Poor little hot water bottle kids.

AFingerofFudge · 23/12/2012 17:35

I know Violet it's just a shame for them at this time of year! Will have to try to persuade him somehow to take the nurofen thing but at the moment he just retches if I try to give it him. (He's one of those types who is extremely fussy about foods and decides before he's even tasted anything that he doesn't like it)

I hope you are able to see a doctor today.

I expect that red eyes, red face, high fever could be symptoms of a number of diseases. One which specifically comes to mind is Kawasaki disease, so best to have it checked out I think.

Hope he gets better soon.

Sounds like the flu to me. My two (and myself) have had the same. It was the eyes that freaked me out. But there has been epidemic at the school and was confirmed as influenza B - yours sounds very similar. Not much you can do - both mine had it one week to the day! Up and down, sometimes almost normal and then down again - and then just when I thought it was over (4 days in) they headed back down hill again Hmm. Sorry, it does sound similar though. Hope they feel better soon x

My 2 have the same here- thought maybe the sore looking puffy eyes were sinusitis. Ds2 is four and he has been really hard hit by it- today it is terrible tummy aches on and off and a worsening cold. Thought he was better yesterday lunch time after coming down with it on Thursday afternoon but he's really feeling sorry for himself. "mummy why hasn't the medicine made my poorliness go away?"

Hope all these ill children feel better soon, poor loves.
