Ds (3 yo) has an underarm temp of 39.0, pulse 130 and has just started with a dry croupy cough. first got a temp last night and was sick, but I think that was the temp rather than a bug. bit brighter today but ragged now and saying he feels cold. he has had a runny nose for a couple of weeks. I can feel a bubbling in his chest when he coughs, not sure if it was a bit of sick that never came up or actually on his chest. he's due a more calpol in the next hour. Dont want to drag him out unnecesscarily but worried. any suggestions? he doesn't ever really get ill so i'm not sure what to do other than keep him dosed up on calpol.

Might be worth calling 111 for advice or your out of hours GP. Quite often they can reassure you without you having to drag a sick child out into the night. I'm just up waiting to give my 5YO DS some more calpol too for a similar thing. GP put him on ABs for possible whooping cough and he has tonsillitis too. The nights are the worst though I don't know how many nights I have spent awake wondering whether to call GPs etc!! Good luck.

didn't want this to go unanswered, I know how horrible it is when you're worried about them, especially at night.

I'm afraid I don't have any expert advice though, and don't know if that pulse rate is normal or not Blush. I think the heartbeat is faster when they have a fever anyway.
I am by no means an expert but (apart from heartbeat which I have no clue about sorry) I would probably give him calpol (when it's due) to get the fever down, and as long as he's not having difficulty breathing, I'd leave it to see how he is in the morning. Or call NHS to put your mind at rest. If they think you need to have him seen tonight they will tell you.
Hope he's better in the morning

Sounds like bug that is doing the rounds. My DS 8 had it a couple of weeks ago. Because he was struggling to breath after 24 hrs took him to OOHs and he was given antibiotics. 12 of his classmates came down with it simultaneously. He recovered very quickly not sure whether this was antibiotics or just good constitution but consensus of opinion that probably WC

OOH GP advised cal pol and ibuprofen to help with fever but I think you need to see Gp before using both. I would see GP if temp keeps spiking after 48 hrs. Even if just to get adv about medication. Also make sure they drink plenty. Fever & vomiting dehydrate them and this makes them feel much worse.

thanks all got my nerve back now. hes settled down a bit with the calpol will see how how he goes in the morning.
