Norovirus - how long does it hang around for?

Dd is 2.7. For about 2.5-3 weeks, she's been having very loose nappies. Not every day, more like every 3-4 days, but she doesn't poo in between.

We've been assuming that this is just a viral thing that had been going around, but surely it should be clearing up by now?

When I picked her up from nursery yesterday, they mentioned that she'd had loose nappies about 45 mins after meals - that doesn't happen at home. But they questioned whether she might be allergic to something?

Has anyone got any wisdom they can impart? I'm going to book her a GP appt over Christmas, but I really don't know what to think!

Hi Stetsons

I did a similar post this morning. 'Diarrhoea won't go away.' My DS had similar virus and is into third week of very loose poo now. He is going 3-4 times a day though. It's killing me - up in the night clearing up poo and then he doesn't go back to sleep straight away. Argh!

It's been suggested they can get lactose intolerant after illness but I'm not sure.

Right, got to go as I've just got a whiff from DS and here we go again....!

Norovirus tends to come on very quickly and be finished with as in being sick and upset tummy after about 12/24hrs.

Although it can take a few days for dc to be better.

Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty sure we can rule out norovirus then! Since Monday she's been going every day so dh is taking her to the doc this afternoon to rule out anything sinister.

I'll look for your other thread, how's he doing today?

Just wanted to say DD1 had this for weeks, not proper diarrhea just sludge really, and it stank! Took her to the HV and they said it is just one of those things that often happens as the digestive system matures. As long as they don't have a temp, don't have any problems with wet nappies etc it will just go on its own.

Sure enough it did. DD1 was around 2 at the time.

Oh, that's interesting billy. Today it's been like water according to my nan who's watching her. But mostly it's like sludge. I'm hoping it is one of those things she'll grow out of!

HI stetsons and Billy

Glad you posted Billy, that is good to hear that it eventually goes. I also spoke to HV yesterday and she said can def happen with teething (in spite of what doctors say!).

So we've had virus, possibly two, after a cold, on top of teething and now another cough/cold which started yesterday. 6 nappies or more yesterday. Sore bum too. Ho Hum. Better night's sleep last night though so grateful for small mercies :-)

Let us know how you get on at doc's.

Glad I found this thread - DD2 is 19m and has been going like a trooper for 3 days now. 3 - 5 times per day, once in the night (and she doesn't go back to sleep). Very stinky explosions indeed, but she is otherwise perfectly fine.
It is possible she is teething, and she is also getting over a bad cold.

Hope it's all over by Christmas everyone!
