diarrhoea won't go away

My DS 16 MO, had a virus which started about a month ago. He had a high fever and was unwell for couple days then got better for a couple of days before developing diarrhoea and vomitting. The vomitting stopped but the diarrhoea continued. It was absolutely foul smelling but thankfully it is now 'normal' smell again but it is still very runny. Doctor hasn't seen him but I spoke to him and we've had 2 stool samples tested and nothing came back.

It is apparently 'just' a virus but this diarrhoea just won't go away.

He is teething as well. Could this just be runny tummy with teething off the back of a virus which is why it is going on so long? He's not dehydrated but it's very hard work. Been up in the middle of the night most nights as he has messed himself. He's getting nappy rash which I'm treating. He's not eating properly. Last night he screamed at tea time and wouldn't eat anything other than ice-cream so maybe mouth was hurting. He is probably going around 4 times a day with very runny poop. Oh and before the virus he was taking lactulose because he had the opposite problem and was constipated.

Any ideas/thoughts? Should I just sit it out or ring doc again?

My 11mo lb has had it for 3 months doctors telling me its 'normal' changed his milk to lactose free made a small difference, been told they can get a temp allergy to lactose from a virus? But from where I'm sitting 3 months doesn't seem very temporary!

Thanks Lucy. Lactose had been suggested from another thread and I've had him on soya milk for a week now with no difference. I've not given him much in the way of other diary either but I'll keep going with the soya milk as I guess it won't do any harm. I've bought a probiotic for kids from some other reading I did but it hasn't come yet. Hoping that might help too, got to be worth a go?

Has your LB still got it or did it just go away ?

He's been on soya for 3-4 weeks now and is a really funny eater some days he just will point blank refuse everything but days that he will eat 3 meals it seems to improve (not as runny)
He still has it has dirty nappies 4-6 times a day!

Will def try! his bum is suffering going through pots of nappy cream!

MissCellania · 19/12/2012 23:49

Soya really isn't recommended as a main drink for a child of that age, so unless you have some reason other that diarrhea, I wouldn't continue. Diarrhea in toddlers is really really common, especially after a virus, but even with no cause long term diarrhea is not abnormal.

I'm glad I came across this thread I was going to start one myself as my 8mo dd has had a runny tummy for about 3 weeks now, not every nappy, but at least once a day she has diorrhea (sp?)
My oh has had norovirus this week and dd diorrhea has got worse.
She has a pretty plain diet, I can't think if anything new I have given her but I think I am going to cut things out to see if it makes any difference, do you think that would help?

Hope your dcs are better soon Lucy and root.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 20/12/2012 10:35

Agree soya really isn't recommended. If it was me I'd go straight to the GP and leave all milks and dairy off for a couple of days.

Rootatoot · 20/12/2012 13:45

It's alpro soya 1 year plus that I've been using so I'd assume it's ok as it's labelled for children? The probiotic for infants came today too so giving that a whirl to see if it helps. Still having lots of loose nappies. I'm exhausted.

Just because a manufacturer says that the product is for children, I wouldn't assume that made it ok. At that age it should be BM or full fat cows and I would only swap to anything else on the advice of a doctor.

Glad the probiotics have come and hope you get a rest at nap time.

Lucy411 · 20/12/2012 14:44

I can't cut milk out all together as I said before he's a funny eater some days all he will have is milk, also doctor said not to just cut out dairy & milk all together as this can sometimes upset there tums even more, let me know if any improvements from taking the probiotics :)

And I have recently been in hospital with him when he got dehydrated and doctor there said to put him on lactose as it is no different apart from the obvious lactose free milk still have the nutrients he needs as he doesn't really eat and doing him well as he isn't underweight and without it I think he would have been by now!

Rootatoot · 20/12/2012 14:45

Thanks Jilted, he is mainly BF but obviously I use other milk in cereal etc. Can't say I've noticed any difference in a week or so, so will probably go back to FF milk in a day or two, if no improvement.

Might be coincidence, but started the probiotic yesterday. Today, no messy nappy during the night or after breakfast. Went before his lunch and it was almost 'normal'. Hooray! End in sight I think.

Just need rid of the cough/cold/catarrh now!

How's your LO Lucy?

You have to stop all dairy and formula or milk for 2-3 days until daiaria stops. Give just bread, potatoes, rice, lots of water. Not as hard as It's sounds, he will eat less, but will make it up later.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/12/2012 19:09

I'm guessing though that if the ops Lo is mainly bf she won't have to stop the formula, she also doesn't have to offer lots of water as the BM will keep him hydrated Xmas Smile. Formula isn't recommended for children of that age anyway.

Agree with the bland foods though and glad to hear that he poos are returning to normal root
