High temperature - do I need to take him to the GPs

DS2 was sick on Saturday night just as we were going to bed, and had a high temperature but was shivering and complaining of being cold.

The temp has continued since then spiking at 39.9 and coming down to around 38.8 with Calpol. He's sleepy but I'm not sure if this is because we've both had a disturbed night.

I'm trying to get him to have water and have also tried ice lollies but have only got about a pint of fluid in him.

So do I need to take him to see the GP or is it something we just ride out

Thanks

how old is he?
is it purely a temp or is he still being sick?
are you giving paracetamol regularly?
is his breathing ok?

I would call the GP if his temp doen't come down and he's a little one.

if he can sleep, let him sleep - truly the best medicine.

if the high temp lasts more than a couple of days, and he is not right in himself, go to docs.

also, if he gets lethargic and "not right" (you will know) take him immediately

no need yet, esp. with all the other bugs around in the doctors waiting room at this time of year

hope he gets better soon

yes, depends on his age - the younger they are, the faster they can dehydrate and go downhill

what age is he? Have you tried ibuprofen as well as paracetamol?

2gorgeousboys · 17/12/2012 08:20

Thanks for the replies. He's 8. I've been alternating Calpol and Ibuprofen. His lips are really cracked and dry. I'll persevere with the water and see how he is later I think.

Thanks for all your advice.
