Febrile convulsion

sweetiepie1979 · 17/12/2012 00:21

Dd had a febrile convulsion this morning, never had one before, it was just awful. Husband took control while I phoned ambulance. Went to hospital and she has v swollen glands. Have been given penicillin and she's on calpol and ibroproven(sp) . Earlier in the evening she got really hot again didn't get calpol in to her on time and she was sleeping on top of me was just trying to space calpol out as much as I could but the temp just happens so fast anyway we managed to cool her and though she was a bit jerky she didn't convulse. She is lying in bed with me now just nappy and t shirt temp fine I'll wake her for calpol at in 30 mins but then she can't have anything for 6 hours I'm dreading it happens again. Just needed to say all that to someone.

You have my sympathy sweetiepie, I hope your dd gets over the temperature very soon. My ds had these when he was a baby and the first few were terrifying.

sweetiepie1979 · 17/12/2012 00:47

Oh thank you x

HmmPoor you and her.

I'm sure you know this already but try and space them every 3 hours so calpol at 7am, ibuprofen at 10am, calpol at 1pm and so on. It's difficult sometimes though - I had to give dd it more frequently yeaterday because her temp wasn't reducing.

However, now your dd is on antibiotics she should be improving soon anyways .

Also if your dd is big for her age then you can always check she's getting the correct dosage for her weight rather than age - a doc can tell you. I have to do this and ds and dd are both super tall.

sweetiepie1979 · 17/12/2012 10:10

That's such good advice I'll sort that out today. I'm struggling to keep them 3 hours apart calpol at 8 ibro at 9 but I should see an improvement today shouldn't I? Ok...

Can I just give you a quote that has kept me going. Its by Dr Christopher Green in his book Toddler Taming

"The odd fever fit rarely harms the child, just it's mothers nerves"

My dcs have a genetic disorder called gefs+ which meant they have a lot more fc than normal and my ds 17 carried on having them until 13 (fingers crossed he has had his last one).

3ForMe · 17/12/2012 13:49

Oh it's so frightening isn't it? Our ds1 had a fc and went blue. It was the scariest few minutes of my life watching him waiting for the ambulance.

I hope your dd starts to get better quickly.

I think if you keep on top of the dosing she'll be fine. Even a whiff of a temperature in any if mine now and they're dosed up on calpol and ibuprofen!

Fingers crossed ages well enough to enjoy Christmas x

BeaWheesht · 17/12/2012 14:43

Yea you should see an improvement. Dd (2) started on amolxycillin yesterday lunchtime for a chest infection - she hasn't needed calpil today as temps been below 38 but is still coughing til she's sick :( so, an improvement but not totally better!

sweetiepie1979 · 17/12/2012 23:37

Ok thanks. It's been a long day as soon as she is due meds I've got to give her them otherwise temp just goes right up even tonight after the nurofe she got a temp of 39 again so stripped her rigjt off and lay her down managed to avoid an fc. She has loads of gunk coming from her eyes so will take her to doc tomorrow in case that's conjunctivitis. It seems to be a nasty head cold I've got one of those plug in things which is working well and baby Vicks. Thanks for all the advice I need it first time mum and first time she's been sick.

His again I'm thinking of bringing her up to a and e she's not had any more fits but we are struggling to keep her temp down from 39 every few hours we have to lie her naked in a cool room with the window open. Why hasn't penicillin worked, maybe I wasnt careful enough to give it to her on a completely empty tummy sometimes anybody??

Ok what did they prescribe the medicine for? Was it chest, tonsils ?

It could well be that she may need a different type of AB. It sounds like a v nasty infection and if she is still unwell and hard to keep temp down with a history of convulsions I would have her seen again yes.

BeaWheesht · 18/12/2012 01:07

If you're worried call nhs. Hope she's better soon, it's horrid when they're ill.

sweetiepie1979 · 18/12/2012 01:09

They say glands she had one fit and that was Sunday morning when it kicked off. She's had all her medicines for today and tonight but temp at 39 we did have drops in temperature earlier in the day .... What you think?

A&E sounds like a good plan, NHS direct otherwise but they would likely tell you to go to A&E anyway if my experiences with them are anything to go by.
I was terrified when my DD had an fc, you have my sympathies Sad

MistletoeAndVino · 18/12/2012 01:15

Otherwise cod your out of hours doc refer you to the peads assessment unit if you have one, as a follow up to your earlier hospital visit? Mine did that for me once so we bypassed A&E and went straight to peads.

weegiemum · 18/12/2012 01:25

I just saw this, my ds (middle child, I've got dds on each side) had fbc from his 2nd jags. Had all other jags in hospital (up to preschool, not travelling ones we got later).

It's really scary watching it, calling ambulance etc (my dh was there for the 2nd one, he's a GP and it was me that was cool and phoned 999)

It's ghastly trying to cool them! When I have a temp I get Cody in bed. With a child you have to cool them. Calpol/brufen every 3 hours each helps. Cool them with thin jammies, no quilt, lots of cuddles.

Poor kids, I was there last week with mine with norovrus and my oldest is almost 13, youngest just turned 9!!

bruffin · 18/12/2012 05:46

It is scary, but the temperature isn't really the problem as such. It's when the temperature shots up that tends to cause the fc. With my dcs it was usually first sign they are sick.
Hope she is feeling better soon

sweetiepie1979 · 18/12/2012 10:13

His all we took her to kids a and e and they said def her throat but she should be over the worst of it and will be starting to get better from now. I asked about calpol dosage and they've put it up to 7 mls which will be a great help. She has conjunctivitis in both eyes too. But I think temp shouldn't be a problem today. Thank you all so much for your quick responses it's been a great help having you here. Xx
