Who should I talk to re: dd's lack of confidence in social situations?

She is in secondary. Is bright and sensible. Copes really well with the education side of school, but has never coped so well with the social side.

She has a few friends, but often lacks confidence when it comes to friendships. She will assume that they are falling out with her and are not her friend, often without any cause. She thinks that she doesn't deserve friends or that she doesn't need them.

It doesn't help that half of the girls in her school went to a different secondary and that her 2 good friends are no longer in the same school as her. But she had started to make stronger friendships with some of the girls she was in primary with, as well as a few new friendships.

At parents' evening her tutor particularly commented on the fact that she noticed that DD was 'often alone' and encouraged her to join a few clubs. DD gave it a go for a week or 2 but it didn't take.

Both her Dad and I were quiet people at her age, but we did have our small groups of friends. It is starting to worry us a bit that she is without friends.

I would contact her head of year and raise your concerns. They should be able to offer extra pastoral support and/ or counselling if you and they think it would be helpful.

Thankyou. I was pleased in one way that they had mentioned it, and it hadn't gone unnoticed. But on the other hand unhappy that it still seems to be something that she struggles with.

We'd hoped that a fresh start with everyone being in the same boat of making new friends and getting used to a new school would have given her a help.
