Persistent headache in 5yo

BuiltForComfort · 15/12/2012 20:54

Ds is 5.7 and hit his forehead on a curved table edge at school on Weds morning. No mark or bruise but he's had a headache ever since. No symptoms, he is as lively & chatty as ever but says it hurts / aches.

As he's my PFB I took him to the dr yesterday who checked him, said he was fine & gave me the go-ahead to dose him with a larger measure of Calpol than stated on the bottle. 36hrs later no change.

Any thoughts or advice please? Thank you.

Personally I would take him to A&E.

Another one here for A&E, by worth the risk.

ShhBoom · 15/12/2012 22:18

by?! That's supposed to say not..

BuiltForComfort · 15/12/2012 22:51

Dithering here. He has nothing else wrong with him, GP checked his eyes and felt his head. Will A&E not just do what the GP did? He is fast asleep and its Saturday night - I don't want to drag him off to a busy inner city hospital if it can be helped, especially given he is no different than at any time over the last three days.

Sorry, I know I sound like I'm just fishing for an answer that suits me, I guess I was hoping for a definitive "you must go because this is what happened to us" or otheriwse a reassuring reply, which is daft.

Has he vomited at all? Does he eat and drink okay?

If he is not drowsy and has played okay today I would wait till tomorrow (let him sleep now, unless you have any concern that he was unusually sleepy/drowsy).

If he still complains of a headache tomorrow I would take him to A&E so they can do an MRI.

I do find that a headache for so many days since the incident is a bit odd though and he is too young to make it up/attention seeking, so that is a slight worry.

Have you considered phoning NHS direct?

barleysugar · 15/12/2012 23:16

When I had a mild head injury I had a headache for several days afterwards, it was part of concussion. I also got my mords wuddled up!

I'm inclined to say don't worry, but if he seems particularly sleepy or lethargic or confused get straight to a&e.

BuiltForComfort · 15/12/2012 23:19

No other issues, he's very active, eating plenty, not been sick, no blurred vision or unexpected sleepiness etc. I did the NHS symptom checker, rang NHS Direct yesterday where they ran through the exact same check list. They rather tentatively suggessted A&E but tbh that's what NHS direct always say! That's why I went to the GP as I knew we could see someone promptly rather than hanging about at the hospital.

Unless the hospital is likely to send him for an X-ray or MRI I don't know why we would dash off there right now. Surely they will run through the same checklist, look in his eyes, feel his head and only then if they think there's a problem send him for more tests? Very happy to be told something different - if the hospital will take the single symptom of a headache as a reason for further investigation then we should go I guess.
