Painful poo in the night (14 month old)

Skang · 15/12/2012 07:44

DD has started having a poo in the night suddenly. She will wake up beforehand by tossing and turning in her sleep for 10-15 mins which progresses to her crying and shouting and ends with a poo after a lot of straining and beig very red in the face. She generally stands up for the last part. The poo isn't at all hard, it actually verges on being diorhea.

It's been happening at 5-5:30 am but this morning in was 2:30am and so was difficult to get her back to sleep. When it's 5-5:30 I cant get her back to sleep and it throws her naps out all day.

I haven't changed her meal times.

Could it be constipation? Should I take her to be doctors? Last time I was at the docs he basically told me I was being PFB about the problem (I don't think I was!) so wanted opinion on if I'm over reacting.

Thanks.

I should add that she still has further poos during the day and it's about 50/50 as to whether she shouts beforehand on those.

Is it an excuses for her to be getting up? I would not getup with her and if she causes a fuss without going back to bed then I would think of something punitive. If she is straining to push out a runny poo. I think it sounds behavioural rather than medical.

AntoinetteCosway · 15/12/2012 08:50

I think runny poo can actually (oddly) be a symptom of constipation-it's what gets around the blockage iyswim.

Skang · 15/12/2012 14:11

Oh no, I don't think it's behavioural at all. She's not wanting to get up to play, she's upset and grumpy. She is obviously in discomfort or pain before she even wakes up (we cosleep so I know she is flapping around and moaning before she wakes).

Hmm, yes I did wonder if I'd heard that before Antoinette. Maybe I should get her checked just in case.

I would say constipation then, it may be impacted then and runny poo is a result of what is getting past the blockage. I would taker back to gp and say as much.

I'm actually starting to wonder if it's IBS, which runs in the family on her dad's side. She's been going a lot more since she started eating a wider range of things and we have eaten out a lot in the last week so se has ended up with richer things.

Last night she woke at 12:30 and then at 6:30 crying and pooing, poor thing Sad

:( maybe just stick to chicken rice and pasta for a bit, something easy on her tummy. Perhaps some probiotic yogurt would help reset the bacteria in her tummy. Plenty of water. I really hope she feels better :(

Skang · 17/12/2012 12:08

Thank you, so do I.

She had it again last night despite eating nothing rich or likely to cause IBS symptoms. The dr doesn't think constipation as she's still going during the day. We have to take a sample in (lovely) to check for infection and if not we'll be doing a food diary.

A food diary is definately a good idea! Dd2 used to have really painful pops. Always appeared to be struggling to do them despite the fact they weren't remotely solid. They were green and stank! Almost an acidic smell and her little bum was red raw. Was always accompanied by alot of squirming and grunting for ages before hand. Turned out to be the milk.

I hope it's something easily avoidable or treatable. It must be exhausting both of you :( hope the tests come through soon!!!

Skang · 18/12/2012 11:31

Hers have been on the green side recently actually. They also have a sweet sickly smell.

Yes it is exhausting, it's been about 9 months since I've had to change nappies in the night and I'm not enjoying going back!

It could be nothing or she could be fighting off a bug.

Can also be a sign of a food intolerance.

If you are still breast feeding greenish poo ( if it's frothy) can be a sign of too much foremilk and not enough hind milk.

Skang · 18/12/2012 22:57

Hmmm. I really hope it's just a bug and easily fixed. She has been sensitive and clingy today. I don't know if she's feeling ill or just tired.

Did it take you long to work out it was milk with your DD?

Be wary of rice! It can swell up as it passes through the intestines, and cause even more pain for your DD.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 19/12/2012 06:55

I knew pretty much straight away except convincing hv/gp took a few weeks. Got fobbed off with the usual colic/silent reflux generic diagnosis. Eventually managed to explain to a dr that I was t after free milk, wouldn't have had a baby if I couldn't afford to feed her and that being able to buy it in a shop was somewhat more preferable than worrying about faffing around with prescriptions. Also explained that if the trial
Didn't work then I wouldnt ask again but of it rules it out then we know where we r.

Funnily enough the milk instantly worked and never looked back after that.

How did your dd do
Last night?

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 19/12/2012 07:10

Also if they r allergic/intolerant to the cows mill protein then if unto ur brestdeeding you can just cut out dairy from your diet. If its lactose however, that will still Be in your breastmilk.

Might be worth looking at the signs of hind milk/foremilk imbalance if you feel it's possible you have an over active let down or there's been a change in your milk production.

If its a bug then tou can just breast feed through it. Although i was a ff so I'm
Sure other brestdeeding experts would be better equipped :)

Skang · 19/12/2012 21:15

When she was little neither of us had dairy at all because she seemed to have some signs that it was upsetting her. We actually both stopped again for a couple of weeks last month to see if it affected a rash she's had for months (it didn't) so I don't think it can be milk. I would think that it would be more immediate like with you.

She didn't have a poo until 6:50 this morning! And she'd already been awake a while and there was no crying involved. Fingers crossed tonight is the same.
