Growing pains

DS (5) woke up screaming in agony last night. I thought he had cramp in his legs but Dr Google came up with growing pains and it all seems to fit (except DS does complain of sore legs during the day too)

Does anyone have any tips on how to ease the pain? Will calpol really help?

DS2 gets this, as did I. Warmth helps, so fitted long pyjamas, possibly socks too. Calpol does help. If all else fails, rubbing DS2's calves helps ease the pain.

pyjamas and socks already in place

will keep the calpol handy for tonight and I will try rubbing his calves

how long do the phases last for your DS2? How long did you suffer with it?

It started when I was 5 or 6. Can't remember when it stopped but definitely before puberty. DS2 is ten now and hasn't had them at night for a couple of years, but does occasionally get them in the daytime. You can get a sort of modern version of a hot water bottle which you heat up in the microwave which might help.

i know the thing you mean - will have a look

is it normal to still feel pain the next day?

Does he have any other symptoms? DS2 and I both have mild hypermobility and I've sometimes wondered if the growing pains were related, but I don't have any evidence for this.

one website i looked at did say there is a link with hypermobility

i don't think he has other symptoms

I seem to remember the pains came in phases that were several months apart. I don't think they ever lasted for more than a couple of nights. I hope your DS feels better soon and sleeps well for the rest of the night.

thanks

i hope your DS grows out of them soon too!
