Blood test results - liver

DS (4) has just had repeat bloods done as his last ones showed a high reading for phos (liver), which apparently is not unusual for children. 2nd results in and we have been called in to see the doctor re:liver function. I am utterly terrified, but trying to be rational.

He's having surgery thurs (teeth removal), just feeling a little a lot overwhelmed.

Has anyone had experience with liver results??

Alk phos is an enzyme that is present throughout the body. High levels in the blood usually come from either the liver or bones. In children it is often raised because they are growing. This is normal.

We're the rest of his LFTs normal?
Why was he having blood tests done?

Thanks totally, the rest of the results were normal afaik.

Blood test were due to him being run down, weight gain not good and general lethargy. He had bad tonsillitis in June and in Sept was still not 100% but not ill.

If all the other results were normal then it's probably either just because he's growing or because of a viral infection.

The other thing with blood results is that they are compared against a 'normal range', but generally 5% of normal healthy people will get a result either above or below that range. If you do enough tests you're likely to get an 'abnormal' result on any healthy person.

Easier said than done, but try not to worry until you've met with the doctors and heard what they've got to say.

Thanks totally, that really helps me gain some perspective. I'm trying not to worry.

Seeing GP in morning so not long to wait!

GP not overly concerned but referring to peads doctor for review of results, they may call him for an ultrasound of his liver or may decide no further action. Confused, guess it's nothing to worry about.

Glad to hear it all sounds ok.
