My 2 year old has mouth ulcer and inconsolable

My 2 year old ds has a large mouth ulcer on his tongue. I took him to the GP today and was told to give him bonjela he gets hysterical when I try to put it on and the only thing he would eat today was soft bread. The added complication is Thad he has PKU and his protein substitute which he has to have to keep his blood levels stable seems to be really aggravating the ulcer. I've been trying to give him 2 hourly calpol/nurofen but he's now refusing that too? It's the first time he's had an ulcer though I've had them all my life so obv think he must have inherited them from me! Has anyone any ideas what on earth I can do to ease his pain and help him to eat? xxx

My daughter and I suffer from them an awful lot, Bonjela is rubbish for them anyway.. My dd would never let me near enough to get anything on it to help her and at age 2 your probably going to find it impossible.. Other things that help me with mine is to wash my mouth out with salty water.. Don't know if you could get him to do that without him swallowing..? Failing that sipping some icy water might help so he can eat a bit? I really sympathise mouth ulcers can be v v painful. Poor little fella xx

Thanks T81 i have never found bonjela any good either I use bicarbonate of soda on mine which is really stingy but works thonI am scared to do anything that might traumatize him more. I will try the ice tho and ice pops might help? Thanks again for replying! Fxxx

This is awful. Had one two days ago. What helped me was the following drink: Pour boiling water over sliced ginger (in a mug, of course). Stir aplenty. After 10/15 mins stir again and (for a kid) remove the ginger pieces. Add their favourite honey to taste plus about a quarter of a squeezed lemon. This might seem slightly counter-intuitive due to the presence of acid in the lemon jice, but my ulcer (which was mean and nasty) has totally gone, three cups later. Methinks even a few teaspoons, or sipped in a bottle may be helpful.

Would high grade manuka honey help?

In hospitals it is now used in certain dressings due to its antibacterial properties. You can buy it in Holland&Barrett.

I would put a little directly on the ulcer a few times a day plus before going to bed.

Your welcome fifi... Hope today has been a little better for him xx

Thanks all of you I will have a go with the ginger/honey combo if he will try it Iwill have to check if he can take manuka honey tho that also
sounds promising? Today was a nightmare tbh peaks and troughs of hysterical screaming then sleeping for about 10 minutes asking for food then screaming when anything touched his tongue. I phoned the GP in despair again and was told to 'hold my nerve' helpful after nearly having a breakdown in the waiting room with impatient fellow patients...Spoke to dietitian and just going to have to let his levels go high for a few days as terrified I'm going to create some negative food association with his protein substitute if I try to force it. On a positive note he no longer has a temperature and he did seem a wee bit brighter this eve so fingers crossed the worst is by xx

Try Anbesol oral liquid. It's great and can also be used for teething. As it a a liquid u can just dab it on with a clean finger and stays on the site. I have a lot of ulcers and use it myself. I also recommend it to my patients. Can be tricky to find but i managed to get it at super drug .
You could also get your DS to rinse with hot salty water. This will also help
