what could you find during a kidney scan

that would need urgent attention?

dd has been having numerous courses of antiobiotics for UTI/kidney infection and the last one finally seemed to clear things, but by then her GP had already referred her for a kidney scan, which she had last Thursday; ultra sound man went over her lower regions very carefully

had a phone call from the surgery this afternoon to say she needed to come in asap

as I am working I suggested maybe she could go in on her own (she is 16) but receptionist said doctor had put a note that I should accompany her

the only time they had available was tomorrow morning and when I said dd has her college interview then, receptionist told me doctor had said it shouldn't wait (eventually she found another appointment on Thursday morning)

does this sound bad to you?

dd is much better in herself though with some residual pain and feeling a bit queasy at times

but I am getting a bit worried

any ideas?

Could be that the scan showed some kidney damage from reflux / infection - which would be taken seriously as they will want to preserve renal function.

Sorry that's probably not massively helpful but saw your thread in Active and it caught my attention as my DS1 and DH have both had kidney problems.

cory · 10/12/2012 22:34

Thanks, that is helpful. I know nothing about kidney problems as we've never had them in our family (hope your ds and dh are ok).

If there was kidney damage, any idea of what that might mean for dd or how it could be treated?

cbd · 10/12/2012 23:14

Sorry have no advise or help, but saw your thread in Active and thought i'd say hope everything is ok for you and your DD. my DD is only 7weeks old and currently on antibiotics as been is minute she was born, during my 20 week scan it was noted that both kidneys are dilated and possible blockage in her bladder, she is now having ongoing scans. I hope its nothing serious my thoughts are with you.

TeamSledward · 10/12/2012 23:22

My DS1 was identified as having dilated kidneys at the 20 week scan, like cbd. He too was on antibiotics from birth. He was taken off them by 6 months and is now 7, having never had a UTI.
I was also treated for recurrent UTI's as a child. There was a fear of scarring, but I did not need treatment in the end. I'm sorry, but I can't remember what that treatment would have been, and it would have been over 20 years ago too!

Hope your DD is seen qoon and that there is no big problem.

cory · 10/12/2012 23:25

Thanks for kind wishes. And hope your dd is all right, cbd.

It is possible she has stones; these the pass into the bladder but could get stuck on the way and need to be removed.
Or it might not be. Don't panic

cory · 11/12/2012 00:12

Thanks, I'm trying very hard not to panic, starfish.

Still, I can't think of anything that would be as bad as a few weeks ago when we thought she was developing schizophrenia (hallucinating due to undiagnosed kidney infection).

Even a scarred kidney is probably easier to live with.

They could have found a cyst or some cysts?

cory · 12/12/2012 07:55

thanks, Juicy

still trying not to panic

dd still in pain and feeling queasy

also, she takes regular tramadol, so I suppose that might mask some of the pain

crashdoll · 13/12/2012 09:38

Hi cory, how's DD doing?

JuicyShops · 13/12/2012 12:26

Hope all went well this morning, if you need to chat about any kidney issues I have experience as my children suffer.

cory · 13/12/2012 14:09

Thanks, folk,

Seems kidneys are ok, but they have found something undefined on one of her ovaries which doctor thinks could be causing symptoms, though we won't know until further investigations. Doctor is hoping it might be a cyst or benign tumour. And she is anaemic.

Unfortunately, I had already rung the receptionist the day before (because dd was in pain) and thought I'd been told she was in the clear, so dd then went into a breakdown because the one thing that really triggers her anxiety issues is having medical investigations that don't show anything (bad experiences in the past- and I mean, seriously bad).

So now we have the breakdown and the cyst or whatever it might be. Managed to get her into school this afternoon but it was not easy.

Still, kidneys are a relief.

Cory that's good news about kidneys anyway. Hopefully now that something has been identified in her ovary you'll manage to get a proper diagnosis and management of whatever it is.

JuicyShops · 13/12/2012 17:30

Glad they have found an explanation to the troubles. Not very nice but at least they know x

cory · 13/12/2012 18:31

Does anyone know about cysts and/or tumours?

OP posts:
maillotjaune · 13/12/2012 19:47

Know a bit about cysts from when a friend had one. Really common (most women have at least one), generally harmless but may cause symptoms if large and need to be removed.

Seem to remember NHS Choices website having good basic info if you want to know more but don't want to google.

DameSaggarmakersbottomknocker · 15/12/2012 16:33

Cory - sorry you have more worry.

You asked how dd was on Skiffen's thread, thought I#d reply here rather than hijack that one. She's OK. Renal scan showed nothing significant which I was dreading as her major issue is cardiac and renal problems could have a big impact on that especially as her meds can also cause renal issues. Bladder wise she's not fully emptying even though she thinks she is. Apparently a good way to ensure better emptying is to do it stood up in the shower. Who knew? She's currently free of infection which is porobably the first time she's been completely clear in 18 mopnths. Wrt the ovary thing they're saying she's polycystic so multiple cysts rather than anything large/more worrying. So you're awaiting further tests?

cory · 15/12/2012 21:21

Good to hear she is ok, Dame. That must have been very worrying for you.

We now have an update, as dd's pain increased sharply yesterday: she was in the shower and bent over and that seems to have done something. GP had already referred to a gynaecologist for the New Year and had nothing more to suggest when I rang her; she prescribed more antibiotics for a possible infection.

After a disturbed night (and some googling) we went to the local out of hours surgery. It seemed a good way to get a second opinion without upsetting anyone. The doctor there said she needed to see a gyno straight away so sent us up to the maternity hospital. They think it probably is to do with the cyst and are sending her for a scan on Monday: in the meantime they have provided her with better pain relief. And they've told us more about the first scan: apparently it is a 6 cm cyst on her ovary- what they can't know, of course, is whether it might have ruptured since that scan picture was taken.

OP posts:
cory · 18/12/2012 18:55

Belated update: the cyst had ruptured. Dd is a little distressed since doctor said it should stop hurting and it hasn't, so she feels bad about that (long back story with having been accused of imagining symptoms in the past), but from what I can find on the internet it is not at all unusual for a ruptured cyst to continue hurting for days or even weeks.

AMumGoingMad · 19/12/2012 13:21

Cory I really feel for your dd. Ovarian cysts are horrible. I had a ruptured cyst (similar sized) I got instant relief from the sharp pain that was there all the time but I had a nagging pain (which wasn't as intense as the pain had been whilst the cyst was there) until after 1 full menstral cycle had passed. The gynae man told me that it was normal to have residual pain after a ruptured cyst. Hope that helps.
