Title says it all really, any have experience?

What to expect after really is my main question?

Also as a side issue supposed to be going to work Xmas night out Saturday, obviously won't go if he is rough, but what is the likelyhood of him being ok?

Dreading it, but needs to be done Sad

Hi dribble. DS2 has a tooth out in hospital under GA when he was about 6. He had it done in the morning and went to a birthday party that evening. He was fine from the moment he came round. That was just the one tooth though.

Thanks sparklingbrook, that's good to hear! To be honest he is a bit dramatic with pain so expecting some problems! They think it will be 2 teeth, but couldn't see properly so they will assess when they put him under.

Hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised like I was. The hospital gave him Calpol before he left, and he did have another dose later IIRC. He had a Spongebob balloon from the hospital shop on the way out. Grin

I was very apprehensive but a lovely nurse came and sat with him with a book of pictures and told him what would happen step by step. A lot of other children were in having the same, I think they did extractions all in the one day. Grin

If its just one tooth you might be ok just keep some medicine stocked up just in case. My nephew had one of his teeth removed under ga he was soo cute recovering from it lol get your video cam ready on your phone.

They are funny when they come round. DS was trying to get off the bed straight away.

My son had a baby tooth extracted under local at the age of seven. I agree with plenty of calpol and ibroprofen afterwards. Make sure you are given plenty of sterile cotton pads if it bleeds afterwards. Ds experience was much like an adult having a tooth out.

I imagine the biggest challenge will be nil by mouth for 12 hours before the GA. Also you cannot eat straight after having a tooth out because of risk of infection.

It might help to have a picnic of carefully chosen foods if you have to stay at the hospital after your son comes round. ie. soft foods that are not hot. It a good idea to pack some games and toys to pass the time or keep your son's mind off food.

When ds had his grommets he was made to stay at the hospital for 4 hours after his op. I don't know what they do for teeth coming out as ds had his tooth pulled under local.

My DS broke a tooth aged 4. It was too far gone to save but not loose enough to just wiggle out so they removed it under GA and also cleaned up his wounds.

When he came round the tooth fairy had been and taped 50p to his pot with tooth in (this was 13 years ago!), so he could still put it under the pillow at home. He came home later the same day and was fine.

This was a front tooth so the gap closed up and meant he had to have braces as his adult teeth got jumbled coming through, but he now has a lovely smile (in spite of breaking BOTH adult teeth aged 8, but that is another story!)

Thanks everybody. It is his back teeth that need removing, although bigger issue arisen about his blood test results (other thread).

You'd be surprised how soon your DS will bounce back. As long as you keep him topped up with calpol & make a bit of a fuss of him he'll be fine. Soft diet and a chill out day tends to be recommended. You might see the site ooze a bit but often it's just a bit of blood mixed with saliva. Just get your DS to bite down on a sterile piece of gauze if not got that then a clean handie for 10 mins. They will give you contact details in case you have any further concerns

dribbleface · 14/12/2012 14:56

Thank you everyone.

He has them out Thursday, and was absolutely fine straight after. Not much pain, little oozing overnight. Eating well Grin

Only trouble i'm having is encouraging to wash his mouth out with salty water. At 4 its very difficult to persuade him! Any tips? (tries bribery)
