Oilatum made excema worse what now?

Dd is only 9 mo. she had a small spot of what the doctor diagnosed as excema which after 10 days of oilatum cream application is much worse. We gave it that long to give it a proper try.

What else can we try, either cream wise or suggestions to improve.

No bubbles in her bath, cjs soap to wash her with and we don't use wipes or other chemically things, she is still bf, eats a good range of all foods.

Thanks in advance!

Did the GP give you oilatum on prescription or just suggest you use it?

DS1 was prescribed Cetraben years ago, and I still use it on all the DC. Maybe suggest it to the GP?

I'm presuming you uses non-bio washing powder.

How often do you bath? I found just bathing every other day made a big difference.

We started on Oilatum, but find Aveeno much better for DD. It's rather a case of trial and error, no one thing works for everyone.

junowiththegladrags · 09/12/2012 18:45

Both mine have it and it's the bane of my life. Cotton clothing only. Same with bedsheets etc.
Oilatum we also found useless, we're using aveeno now with much better results. I've read here that some GPs are prescribing it these days.
Hope your dd isn't too troubled by it.

We get Aveeno on prescription.Xmas Smile

Thanks, for speedy replies!

We were prescribed oilatum so I will either go back or more likely try to get some aveeno from pharmacy as that seems a popular choice.

We only bath every other day usually and wash non bio with cotton clothes - I think, but will check. She always has a cotton vest on though and the sore is on her torso.

You will find it's trial and error - my dd flares with oilatum and the only thing I can wash her clothing in is eucalyptus wool mix. I am yet to find a moisturizer she tolerates.

SquidgersMummy · 09/12/2012 20:44

We use baby eczema aveeno which I buy off amazon fm USA (my GP checked the ingredients for me)- they do a bath powder too - we found oilatum and normal aveeno too harsh - we only bath once a week and use lashing of baby aveeno and waitrose bottom butter everywhere (v v natural and greasy). We don't use any soap or shampoo and double rinse her clothes in the wash. We have 1% hydrocortisone cream on prescription which is great for flare ups with just one application. I think bathing too much just doesn't help - though I know the theory that some say helps.

if it is angry and red you neef a steroid cream in addition to a good moisturiser. which one works for you you have to find out. aveeno is nice, weleda stuff, e45, vaseline just to name a few.
so go back to gp for steroid cream prescription (and don't be fobbed off).

Goldmandra · 10/12/2012 08:34

Try a fragrance-free washing powder like Surcare. My DDs can't tolerate anything with perfumes in.

Agree with Mousy. If it's inflamed she made need a few days of a steroid cream. Also it may be infected in which case she'll need an antibiotic cream.

Go back to the GP to check.

I have suffered from chronic hand eczema and dry skin for years. I'm allergic to loads if emollients eg doublebase, balneum, e45. I don't find diprobase particularly moisturising but it's one of the few I'm not allergic to! My GP has hand eczema himself so I never have any problem getting cortisones (after 37 years I know the ones I need to keep it under control). I've also recently been trying epaderm and haven't had a bad reaction so far!

I have eczema on my hands and the only thing that works us Aveeno. I get it on prescription I think it's because the oats cool it because before it was just burning.
