Fever for 6 days please advice

I generally post under "allergies" section as my son has multiple food allergies and eczema. But for the last 6 days my 2 yr old ds is running fever upto 39.7 C. Calpol does not help so I am giving him Neurofen combined with Calpol which brings the fever down after an hour. However, it comes back again after about 6 hours. I have been to the dr twice and they say its viral. However on my second visit the dr also tested his urine but there was no infection. The dr told me to continue with the current treatment regime but what alarmed me was when he said that if the fever does not get better by the 7 th day then he has to be taken to the hospital as viral fever should get better in 7 days. I am worried sick since. My ds is not a great eater. Now His food and fluid intake has gone down but i am managing to push enough during the day. Does anyone have had any similar experience. Please advice. Many thanks

It is not just the absolute temperature that matters,it also depends how your DS is.Is he lethargic? Is he coughing? Is he pulling his ear?Viral infections can last for 7 days but if he does still have a temp and has not seen the GP for 3 days I would take him back as signs can develop quite quickly in children eg he could now have a red ear or red tonsils which weren't there the last time he was examined. As 2 year olds can't fully communicate it is safer to let the GP examine them again if the temp is not going down.If he is otherwise well it could still just be viral but I would go back just to be on the safe side.As it is now Saturday you might be better off in A&E anyway depending on what your GP weekend provision is like.Hope he is ok

Thanks for your response. He was seen by the GP yesterday. Who examined him - chest, throat and even urine dipstix. He said everything seemed normal (apart from red inflamed throat which can be viral). In between fever my ds plays and runs around but I can see that he looks ill and weak.

May be I should wait today and make a decision tomorrow.

Has anyone's dc has had viral fever for more than 7 days?

He is coughing with phlegm but obviously he cannot spit it out. So it's hard to tell the colour. In the space of 6 days he vomited twice after coughing and brought out food he ate

Personally I'd go back to the out of hours doctors today. A different doc likely to be on so you'll get another opinion. I remember one of my DDs when younger having a temperature for 10 days, I took her to the doctor 3 times. First two times told viral and sent away to give calpol etc, on the 3rd time the doctor seemed almost angry with me(!) that she hadn't been given antibiotics sooner.
