DD has had a horrid cough for a week. She is 16 weeks old. It just seems to get worse, not better. Now tonight I have notices that she makes a rattling noise in her chest when she breathes. She is so miserable, she coughs in her sleep, while she is feeding and often coughs so much she is sick.

I haven't taken her to GP so far as thought there wasn't much they could do for cough, but getting a bit concerned now.

Sounds like a chest infection. You really need to take her to GP/Out of hours.

lifeistooshort · 23/11/2012 20:43

sounds like a chest infection. I would take her to the doctor asap

Sirzy · 23/11/2012 20:44

Is her breathing ok?

I would take her to OOH or even to A and E with her being so young.

lifeistooshort · 23/11/2012 20:44

great minds sparkling...

Yes life. Rattling isn't good.

NellyBluth · 23/11/2012 20:47

OoH's, definitely. A cough is one thing, but rattling isn't very good. You can never overreact with a 4 month old.

EugenesAxe · 23/11/2012 20:47

I'd do something about that. A paediatric doctor friend of mine said coughs lasting more than a week should be checked out. You'd think a virus would be on the way out by now so she may need ABs.

lifeistooshort · 23/11/2012 20:48

Nope indeed. With my three DC (two of whom have asthma) I am well acquainted to any sort of rattling.

Honestly raining if you are not on your way to OOH or A&E, just go. Hope the little one picks up soon

Just to share my recent experience/

Ds had similar to this at 14 weeks and just recently (still now) at 29 weeks. He's spent a few days in hospital each time with the diagnosis of bronchialitis. However the key reasons we were told to be concerned are decreasing feeding to 50% or less, a temp (even if just once) of over 38.5, and when he breathes his chest kind of sinks in (like its hard for him to get oxygen). Most recently (2 weeks ago) he had to have oxygen throughout the 4 nights in hospital.

I would look carefully at dd chest and see if it is sinking in the middle near diaphragm. If it is I'd go to a@e - better safe in these circumstances.

You know her best though so maybe wait until gp or ooh?

raininginbaltimore · 23/11/2012 21:36

Waiting for ooh to call back. She doesn't have a temp, although a couple of times she has felt hot and looked flushed. I don't think her chest looks different to usual.

One listen and the doctor should be able to tell you. Chest infection sounds probable. Wish your DD well soon.

Juustanothermnetter · 24/11/2012 15:00

Is your dd feeling better today?

raininginbaltimore · 24/11/2012 18:23

A little. Ooh sent us to A&E as they didn't have any appointments. They said the rattle is upper chest, so not infection. Got home at 1am. I'm knackered!
