Flu jab for a nearly two year old (medical professionals please)

DD is 21 months. She has a kidney condition (hydronephrosis of one kidney) with a history of UTIs and has therefore been offered a flu jab at the same time I have mine (due to asthma and pregnancy which is due in Dec).

I didn't realise young kids could have the flu jab. I am pro vaccination so please, no replies talking about homeopathic alternatives or the dangers of mercury etc - I won't read them - but I wondered whether there are any medical professionals on here who can tell me is a flub vaccination for ayoung child with these issues a good thing to do?

Many thanks

I am not a medical professional but DS has had the flu jab for the past 2 winters (he is nearly 3) without any problems.

I weighed up the risks of him getting flu (he has asthma so a bit different) and him having the jab and for me it was an easy decision to make in the end.

Can you talk to her consultant/GP to see what they think? Although I doubt they would offer it if they didn't think it was a good idea.

Thank you Sirzy - good to know your ds had jabs and all ok. Yes - I might drop the consultant a line - good idea

she has been offered the flu jab because of her vunrability to infection.

I would have it, flu can be serious in the young, even more so if little body is working hard with other health conditions.

just do it. get it done.

I am pretty wary of the whole idea of just vaccinating for everything. However, my children both have the flu jab every year due to asthma.

Weigh up what the outcomes are, for having it and not. This is what I did. Having seen my children hospitalised for asthma when they have a cold, I didn't want to take the risk with flu. I would be likely to take it, in your situation.

My dd has had the flu jab for many years. Just a couple of points -the first flu jab a child has is normally given in two parts so you need to get on to it if you want her covered for the start of flu season. And also last year some the flu vax stocked by some GPs wasn't suitable for under 5s so just ensure that the right one is given.

They may offer the nasal version this year and I'm not sure whether that is a two dose vaccination.
