ds1 was (kind of) diagnosed with rubella last week, his brother came out with the same rash 2 days later.
we also have ds3 who so far shows no symptoms.

i am immune, but we have no idea about DP, who hasn't had rubella but also is likely to old to have been vaccinated for it.

my question is this: should ds1 have been swabbed by the GP to confirm whether or not it's actually rubella? they're relying in the swab kit we were sent by the HPA to confirm the diagnosis, but that has a 2-3 week turnaround, which means that ds3 can't go to nursery for 3 weeks in case he is incubating it!
The GP also told DP that he is "unlikely to catch it as "most" adults develop a natural immunity"..????

basically I just think that if the GP had done a swab/blood test on DS1 last week we would know by now whether or not it's actualy rubella and whether or not we actually really need to be in our self-enforced quarantine.
shoudl that have been done or is it normal to make people wait the 2-3 weeks for the HPA test to come back to find out?

DD1 had rubella when she was one , our GP at the time didn't take a swab. Me and DP didn't catch it from her and at the time she was an only child. SHe didn't pass it on to any of her friends either.

I don't think the swab from the HPA is to confirm the diagnosis for you it's to confirm it to them so they can keep statistics. That was the impression I got when me, DD1 and DD2 had measles a few years ago.

Hope they all feel better soon.

thanks going.
it's just annoying because if the GP had done a test last week then we'd know by now if it was definitely rubella or not. as it is DS3 is showing no symptoms, but incubation can be 2-3 weeks so we can't go out anywhere for that length of time in case he has it and is contagious.

you're right that the HPA test is purely for their own records, which is why I am questioning whether the GP should be using that as a diagnosis rather than running her own test.
