Diarrhoea in a 4.5 month old

DD is nearly 5 months, mixed breast/formula fed and has not had any solids yet.

She's had diarrhoea for over a week now - gone from no more than 1/2 poos a day to (at worst) a dirty nappy 10-20 minutes after every feed, at best 2 hours between poos (although she usually goes from 11 - 6am without a poo while asleep).

I rang the doctors when it started and they said 'if she's feeding normally, not listless/lethargic and seems happy, just keep feeding and let it work out of her system'. So kept going and it gradually seemed to be getting better, but back to being very green & runny this morning.

Very tired of this now, how long can I expect it to go on? Of course would go straight back to the docs if she appeared listless or weak, but she is her usual happy wriggly self and feeding as normal...I'm just worn out & fed up!

Thanks for the reply - yes, she's very drooly so probably is teething too. However the poo has decreased dramatically today (hurrah!) so hoping we're through the worst.

My 6 month old is teething, has a cold and very bad watery poo for last three days. I rang docs today and they gave him dioralyte. Problem is he hates drinking anything other than formula milk. So, in desperation because I don't want hint to get dehydration, I started to squirt it in his mouth like a game! Then when he was falling asleep I took his dummy out and put bottle of dioralyte in and he drank full 7 oz, probably because he cudnt taste it with being asleep! I feel much better now I know how to get fluids into him :-)

Is it something you are eating that is coming through the breast milk? I think the increased saliva can make poo runnier but not sure if it would cause diarrhoea.

Her poo today was noticeably mucousy, which (according to Google) could mean a virus or getting too much fore milk & not enough hindmilk from breastfeeding.

She is mix fed though - I've been trying to increase the BFing to try and help her get through the diarrhoea, perhaps need to let her/ encourage her to feed from 1 side only for longer so she gets more hindmilk.

Not much practical advice, other than keep feeding and keep her hydrated, but I wanted to send my sympathies to you! DS used to poo minimum 8 times a day when he was a baby and he was the squidgiest pooer ever. I was literally dealing with poo all day long. When he was teething it was vile - acrid smelling, thin and runny, it would strip the hairs from your nostrils!

SO, sympathy to you my dear, dealing with poo all day really gets you down!
