Chicken pox - what more can I do?

2 year old dd has chicken pox, we are on day 5. She has what would probably be considered a moderately severe case. She has a couple of hundred spots, the earliest ones are quite large. Her face is covered, in her ears, on her eye lids, on her lips, in her mouth. Her poor back & bum are in bits. She regularly has high temps (not measured but I'd guess 39 degrees) & earlier today was screaming in pain when sh e woke from her nap.

I've read lots of previous threads on chicken pox, and am stocked up with calamine lotion, poxclin, zirtek, sudocrem, bicarbonate of soda, tea tree oil etc. she is really starting to scratch but the problem is she won't let me put any cream/lotion on her OR give her a bath (not bathed now since saturday). She gets hysterical if I try to.

I feel at the end of my tether. I hate seeing her in pain - the spots look horrific (though wouldn't say they are infected as such) & just want to do something to relieve her discomfort. All I can give her is paralink suppositories (which are a nightmare to administer).

Is there anything else I can do or alternatively is there any chance the end is in sight? We've had new spots every day now, no sign of slowing down .

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Piriton syrup to ease the itching, also has a mild sedative affect and can be bought over the counter for this age group. Maximum paracetamol and ibuprofen as it really is painful and the fevers are distressing too. Can be given together up to the maximum dose of both of them.

Try for the aveeno bath or even running hot water over a sock filled with oats to colour the water a soothing milky solution if she will be persuaded into a body temp bath. The stuff that comes out of the spots sits on the skin and feels like ants constantly biting...really horrible. Much better to wash it off gently in frequent baths. Maybe if she is calmed with the piriton syrup she might go in the bath?

Calamine cream less drying than lotion. Poxicillin etc pretty good I think. I would avoid sudocrem in the nappy area etc because it really stings! Even a thick layer of Vaseline is better. Nappy free for a while if poss.

5th day should be over the worse, but if you think she is not improving call the gp. Good luck.

Hi, have you tried eurax which you can get in either a tube of cream or as I did in lotion form, it's alot like calamine lotion but does'nt leave a white mark on the spots, the lotion goes on white and then turns clear, I found this very effective, also I gave my children showers, my ds in particular preferred them to bath's, he also found it fun as he usually has baths. Hope this helps.
P.S you can get eurax from boots.

You should be over the worst, ds got new spots for 7 days which is fairly unusual I think. If it were my kid I'd try and measure her temp so I know whether is reducin with mess - if not a bacterial infection may be the cause. Neither of my kids were really that I'll with it - they had, at a guess 600 or so spots though - dd was only 14 m too and bicarbonate baths really did help- could you entice her in by letting her play with pots and pans in there or something?? I think Eurex crem is only for 3 and over but not sure, you could try sponging her down with bicarbonate water or maybe an indoor paddling pool ( with lots of towels!!!)

Thanks all for the replies - have just got her off to sleep now. She was absolutely mad with itching & finally relented & let me use calamine & poxclin on her, which have sent her off.

I have some phenergen in the house which I might try as a sedative in the morning before attempting a bath again, otherwise will give a sponge wash a go. Will also try to keep an eye on temp measurements. If no improvement I'll be sending dh on another pharmacy run for piriton and eurax (if suitable for her age).

Just a bit shocked at how bad this is, if I had had any idea beforehand I would have gotten her vaccinated - feel terribly guilty now I didn't.

Thanks again for the tips, best try to get some sleep myself here.
