Green thumb nail <vom>

DD1 (4) got her thumb caught at a park and the nail went bright purple for about 3 weeks. Now the nail is coming off, helped along by her getting it caught on things but the nail bed is bright green. Went to the GP who said it is infected and has given her antibiotics but this is the third day and there doesn't seem to be any change in it. It looks revolting and nothing seems to be happening.

Anyone had this?

Is it swollen? Is she in lots of pain? I would expect both of those things to be the case if it's an infection.

Could it not just be the tail end of the bruise? You know how they go green after a few days, then yellow, then disappear - sure it's not just that? (I know what the GP said, but I've had infections under the nail and usually the pressure is excruciating and I've had to lance it with a hot needle - blech)

Hmm, no pain, she only complains that it hurts when she catches the nail. Doesn't look swollen, just disgusting.

I'd love for it not to be an infection and I was expecting him to do a bit more than just give antibiotics tbh. I bribed her with a toy to be brave because I thought he might lance it.

I guess it could be the bruise. It was extremely purple, much like the post message button below only more purple!

Yes, I know how purple nail bruises can be, quite shocking!

Am tempted to ask you to put a photo of it up on your profile but I'm going to bed now anyway - just want to see how green it is [nosey]

I've just put a fresh plaster on it to stop it catching but if you're lucky I'll take a photo next time I change it. Bet you can't wait! :o

Update :) Because I know you want to know :o

The nail is almost off and, as you suspected, the nail itself is bright green. The nailbed underneath looks fine and dandy. So the GP was wrong and you were right!

But she won't let me pull the nail off :(

Ooo I don't blame her - I'd be all squeamish about that too! She'll probably end up doing it herself, or knocking it off soon, or it'll come off when you change the plaster.
It's funny, I didn't remember being in the same boat myself when you were talking about it before, but as soon as you said that about the nail coming off, I remembered - I had the same problem when I was about 6 or 7 and I couldn't let my parents pull it off either! AND I was allergic to plasters so had it wrapped in a bandage - eventually unwrapping the bandage snagged it off.

Glad it wasn't infected though Wink
