Should I be worried - anyone had this before?

DS aged 4 has had a cold for the last 4 days or so, runny nose, a bit off his food but no temperature or any other simptoms. However he does these really watery farties, it's like his bottom leaks water - clean water! It's not yellow nor smelly, it looks like tap water, sometimes with traces of transparent mucus in it.
It happens 3-4 times after each meal, his pants get a bit wet (it's about a teaspoon of water) so we are now on dry-nites pants Sad
Been to the GP today, she looked a bit puzzled, checked him over for temperature and sore tummy then said it's probably a tummy bug and if it doesn't go away in 7 days to take a sample and go back.

I just think this is very unusual and can't help but worry.... anyone else had anything like this happening to their kids?

Right - a few more attempts then I give up

I'm either very unlucky or this is something nobody ever encountered

I'll try to calm myself down

Nope, this is not working - giving up. Better luck next time

Helping you with the bumps! Does he seem constipated, you can get 'leakage' when they are bunged up. Possibly a food intolerance? Mucus in stools when they are snotty is normal.

No other comments other than see your GP for reassurance.

It sounds like an infection. The only time any of mine had anything like this, it was campylobacter and that gave ds greenish diarrhoea for about a week.

It was ok - got better by itself - I hope your ds is well again soon. How does he seem in himself?

Goldenjubilee10 · 12/09/2012 18:57

Hello, didn't like to leave you on your own there. I'm afraid we haven't had anything like this but it is reassuring that the dr didn't find anything worrying. I do hope it settles down soon - most things do!

surfandturf · 12/09/2012 18:58

Hi, sorry to hear your DS isn't too well. I've never experienced this but I just wondered if they are going for numbers two's normally or could there be a blockage somewhere - constipation? Sorry I can't be of any more help but I would definitely go back in a few days if it hasn't cleared up?

MrsPear · 12/09/2012 19:02

Yes my ds had this although he was much younger so was in nappies but it was a little wiffy! It was cast off as a "bug" by the doctor and told to give it a week. It did clear up but i agree it was most odd!!

BrainSurgeon · 12/09/2012 19:12

Thanks everyone - he's not constipated, he did a rather soft poo yesterday

I am quite worried to be honest Sad

He seems fine except for his cold, he's happy and chatty but his nose is quite runny and his apetite is low

BrainSurgeon · 12/09/2012 19:17

I did wonder about food intolerance or some kind of allergy.... but it's just so odd, nothing but clear water, that must come from the very end of his colon otherwise it would be coloured and smelly no?

See another gp for second opinion or long nhs direct?

BrainSurgeon · 12/09/2012 19:23

I did think about calling NHS direct... will probably do that, just for my sanity.
Thanks everyone for replying

Hello, sorry you got worried by lack of replies! My ds used to get this when he was run down, aged 3-4. We just called them "wet farts", changed his pants and carried on. I think it was when he had a slight temperature, it would affect his digestion. Only realised that he doesn't get it anymore when I read your post.

numbertaker · 12/09/2012 19:29

eek my son got this about the time he went onto solids about 9 months old, strings of green mucus came out for a week or so. It went away in the end.

BrainSurgeon · 12/09/2012 19:34

Merci Eglantyne (would I be right in thinking your name is French - sounds lovely!) that's reassuring...
That's exactly what they seem to be, wet farts... I hope they are caused by this cold virus... He seems to have a runny bottom just like his runny nose

OP posts:
BrainSurgeon · 12/09/2012 19:35

numbertaker I reckon that was a reaction to weaning... My DS just leaks clean water!

loopyloopster · 12/09/2012 19:41

If he's poorly with a cold it's probably just a virus with a bit of tummy upset...I'd follow GPs advice and go back if it doesn't clear up once the cold's gone - It would be a bit unusual for an allergy/intolerance to hit at the same time as a cold I'd think...
