DD has oral thrush (5 weeks old). She is bottle fed.

She has had nystatin for week, it has gone from tongue but there is still white on her cheeks.

Is there anything else they can give? I hate giving her aniseed medicine. It makes her howl.

There's Daktarin oral gel, it tastes better but as its a gel, docs are reluctant to prescribe it for very young babies as a big blob of gel could be a choking hazard. Realistically though if you apply it properly then it's not a risk and you can get it over the counter.

There's also Gentian Violet, a traditional treatment for oral thrush, available otc in prob some but not all pharmacies as it is a bit old school but very effective. Will stain everything purple but only temporarily, supposed to be very effective.

Most 5 week olds will not enjoy anything other than milk going in their mouths so it's just a case of persistence. Also, many babies are not bothered by oral thrush, treatment is usually to stop the breastfeeding mother getting thrush in her nipples (I had for weeks, extremely painful).

Thanks. It was doctor that noticed it when I went for something else.

I don't think she's bothered by it.

Dont worry about it then, as her immune system develops more, it'll probably sort itself out. It's only really if she seems to be uncomfortable feeding that you really need to treat it.

Thanks. She had been very screamy, but I think that has passed. I think the nystatin was making her more unsettled than the thrush.
