alternatives to calpol?

My little boy is 21 months and had his tonsils/adenoids out on tuesday.

Operation went really well and we were discharged first thing wednesday morning with instructions to basically give pain relief every 4/6 hours rather than wait until he needs it so have been alternating calpol/nurofen as they were doing in hospital.

He is doing amazingly well and is eating fantastically but night times are a bit of a nightmare. He cant be in pain as he has had the medicine but is literally awake on and off all night...it's like he can't settle.

It suddenly occured to me this afternoon that it might be the calpol thats keeping him awake as it's obviously got loads of colours etc in it. Bit of a long shot but just wondered if there is anything else I could try...going to see chemist tomorrow to see if there is anything they suggest?

I use the Tesco own brand kiddy paracetamol syrup stuff. It's colouring and sugar free!

Oh fantastic...didn't think of the supermarket own brand ones! I assume it's cheaper as well which is good as we are going through lots of it at the moment.

Its just a hunch but will get some tomorrow and see if it works! Thank you! x

Good luck, hope it works!

Calpol also do one without the colour if he likes the taste

even with pain relief, could still be uncomfortable/sore - think how often a really bad headache doesn't disappear completely after a couple of paracetamol

Medinol is another colour-free one. Hope he feels better soon!

I second the tesco own brand paracetamol. It took a while for me to figure out that it was calpol making DD hyper, literally like their tv ad! Hope your little one gets well soon.

He is actually really good at taking medicine...he has had enough AB's for ear infections bless him that he'll just take anything so Im hoping that he won't mind what it is. They gave him Oramorph(probably spelt wrong!) on tuesday night in hospital and the nurse said it'd be hard to get down him cause it tastes awful but he just swallowed it!

He is such a little star and I am so unbelievably proud of him for coping so well with all of this.

jkkplu-I did wonder if he could still be in pain but it's not a pain sort of unsettled if that makes sense...more of a sort of jiffly/fidgety would rather be awake unsettled. He is absolutely fine during the day-obviously am still keeping on with pain relief during the day as well...but pain is more acute at night I suppose so it could still be that. Will get some of the other stuff and try it...we need some more of something anyway cause have only got a little bit left in the calpol bottle. I did notice the "calpol" they gave in hospital was white so I presume thats a generic version which I would imagine is what the Tesco and other own brand ones are?

Thanks everyone for all your help!
