Which should I be giving - 1yr+ formula or cow's milk?

My DS is 13m and has recently had his 1yr review with the HV. Our normal HV was off sick and new HV, while very warm and supportive, has left me a bit confused to say the least.
Amongst the many areas to review, she asked how much milk he had every day - he has 2 x 180ml bottles of formula. Aside from the fact she said this was nowehere enough (I know 1 pint is recommended but he simply doesn't take any more than that, and there are only so many yoghurts, chunks of cheese, milky cereals and desserts you can give in any one day - which still won't reach the 1pt target), she also seemed incredulous that I was still giving his bottles as formula. She said he should be on cow's milk, and I have always known that it can be given freely from 1 year, but what about the higher stages of formula, which cater for children up to and well over the age of 2? I'm not anti milk at all but, given that these products are readily available, and he's been slowly building up to the next stages, I rather assumed I could carry on and have been offering cow's milk as another drink option to water, as well as using it in porridge and dinners where possible. She insisted milk was best as it would have been the only option decades be (and didn't result in children who were malnourished), as that moving on formula was a money spinner, and why would I not go for milk - better and cheaper - rather than formula, with it's added sugars, ridiculous expense and false claims of being 'nutritionally superior' to cow's milk. I honestly don't know which I should go with now.

I would give cow's milk. I don't see any benefit to follow on milk personally.

There is no benefit to follow on milk - she's right it is a money spinner. Understand she didn't explain it well or v sensitively though. If you can't make him drink a pint don't sweat it though it's an ideal, not a life or death requirement

from 1 year the recommended amount of milk is around 300mls (approx 11oz) so 2 x 180mls is fine especially if he is taking youghurt, cheese, milk in cereal, etc. Full fat cows milk is also fine from 1 year so no need to keep buying expensive formula.

Full fat cow's milk.

from nhs website:

Children between the ages of one and three need to have around 350mg of calcium a day. About 300ml of milk (just over half a pint) would provide this.

Yep, he should get everything he needs from his food intake and full fat cow's milk. No need for formula after 1.

We switched to full fat cow's milk at 12 months.

My friend's daughter didn't like the taste of cow's milk at first and so they had to mix formula and cow until she decided cow milk was fine after all.

Try it and see how it goes.

We switched at 1 to full fat cow's milk with no probs. DTs were prem and still under a paed who basically said follow on is a way for the formula companies to get around UK advertising rules as you can't advertise first stage milks. Now at 13 months the have 60mls in the morning and 180 in the evening (on a good day!) - the paed said that was fine, just mke sure they have yogurt, cheese sauces etc.

Thanks so much everyone, I feel a whole lot less unsure and have taken the first step. Tried a half and half bottle tonight (90ml cow's milk and 90ml formula) to try to blend the taste and also use up the last of the formula, and he had the lot!! Relief - he likes it and I'm doing the right thing. Thanks again everyone, really appreciate the support and info :-))))
