Dd2 age 7 has just been diagnosed with shingles by the gp. I asked her if she would pass chicken pox onto ds age 12 months and she said no.
However the NHS website on shingles says different ??
Anyone any experience ??

DH just had shingles. He had the blisters on his arm. Our G.P said it was only the stuff inside the blisters that is infectious. So if someone who has not had chicken pox comes into contact with the blisters they could catch chicken pox.

Where is your DD rash? are you able to cover it around DS.

if the rash can be covered with clothing and there is no direct contact with the shingles rash then she should not pass on chicken pox. Chicken pox can be caught from shingles but is not passed in the same manner as someone who has chicken pox.

The rash covers her chest, side and back so is perfect for covering. Although they did bath together last night before I knew.
Presumably then if its covered I can send her to school too . Gp said keep her off till Monday but she only went back today !!

The health protection agency says to exclude only if the rash is weeping and cant be covered. Check with the school as they may be reluctant to take her with active shingles

My DD (then 5) had shingles and her younger sister caught chickenpox about 2 weeks later, almost certainly from her. Like your children mine had been in the bath together before we had realised what her rash was.

my little one had shingles aged four and was allowed into both school and nursery because it was on his side and covered by clothing. no one was infected by him. having said that he caught chickenpox in the first place from my dp having shingles! i was really upset that he got it so young but in retrospect it's better to get it over early when they can't scratch too much! good luck - our doc said although shingles is v painful for adults it's not bad in children. so hopefully both your little ones will sail through it.
