Chronic Asthma and persistent wet cough, now under investigation

I'm hoping to get some responses from people who have been through the same or similar. Ds, now 3.10 has had a history from about 6 weeks old of being wheezy. Many A&E visits in the first year, use of the blue and brown inhalers, and steroids. Always deemed to be viral, and always called a 'happy wheezer'. Dislike that description because he certainly wans't very happy when at his worst.

Fast forward a couple of years and after having 5 hospital admissions since January this year, and certainly getting worse not better, he was diagnosed formerly with asthma. We are now under a consultant and he has seretide(the purple one), ventolin and montelukast tablets, along with prednisolone when he's bad.

He has had six courses of antibiotics so far this year, none of which have cleared this persistent, sometimes incessant, wet cough. The consultant has now become concerned about this cough, although I've been telling them that he's had it for at least two years. So I think the next step will be investigations such as bronchoscopy, sweat test, and allergy testing possibly.

Does anyone have experience of something similar? Scaring myself to death about things like unusal bacteria that the antibiotics couldn't kill off, or CF, googling a lot, which I know I shouldn't do, but I feel so helpless for Ds, and really want some answers now.

There is an asthma support thread somewhere on the childrens health where you will find lots of other parents in a similar situation :)

Has he had a chest x ray at all? It has been found on top of his asthma he also has a type of pneumonia which sits dormant in his lungs all the time and at the first sign of illness is triggered - to try to stop this at his next appointment profolactic (sp) antibiotics are going to be discussed.

Like your DS my Ds (2.9) has been ill since 8 weeks when e ended up in HDU he was diagnosed with asthma at 12 months and has had over 15 admissions with his chest. He is currently on clenil, montelukast and serevent daily with ventolin/pred as needed. With this lot he is better but still far from 'normal' and is unable to walk any distance generally without getting breathless. We are currently keeping a diary for allergy testing purposes and his consultant wants to do more tests

Thanks sirzy
I'll have a look at that thread. You poor ds sounds like he's been through a lot. Asthma sucks!
